Hello,

We just moved to Emeryville and live on 64th and Christie. The noise from the train horns are so loud that as they pass by, my sleep is completely disturbed. For example, it's 6:20am right now on a Saturday morning and I'm extremely tired but wide awake from the train that passed by at 5:45am honking it's horn for what feels like a good few minutes waking me.The horns during the day are not so bad - sometimes even nice when it's not loud - but the noise level in the middle of the night is just awful.

I saw that a proposal was submitted to the California Transportation Committee back in January 2018 for the Trade Corridor Enhancement project to address the noise caused by train horns and I wanted to know if there is an update on this.

To add to my original post, we have 4-paned windows and the horns are still very loud. Again, it's not the horns during the day that are bothersome, just the noise level at night. Those trains that pass by around 11pm, 2am, 4am, 5am really disturb my sleep. I speak as a homeowner as well. Emeryville seems like a wonderful city and has so much potential to be even greater, but this middle of the night noise is a problem, and I can see how that would keep home values here depressed, which is bad for homeowners, local businesses, and in turn city revenues. I read through some of the comments on other posts about the same issue and see that some residents like the train horns because they've been around for a long time. I respectfully disagree with these opinions - the city is changing to be more residential than industrial and as such, the city should address concerns of new residents. The city should work with both new and long time residents to find a suitable solution. From my new resident perspective, I just want to be able to sleep peacefully in the night. I don't care about the trains during the day.

Thank you for reporting. The City has a project under design to install Supplemental Safety Measures at our three at-grade crossings, where the goal is to establish a Quiet Zone through this section of the track. We have secured construction funding through the SB1 Trade Corridor Enhancement Program and are going through the review process of the project with Union Pacific and other Railroad stakeholders. In the best of timeframes with minimal hurdles to go through, construction would not be complete until 2020 at earliest. Please look for updates as they come in on the City's Public Works website, or even better in the monthly department progress reports (https://www.ci.emeryville.ca.us/635/Monthly-Progress-Reports).

I'm a resident near the area myself and I would like to address this as well. While I do understand there is a requirement for the trains to sound their horns as they cross, it seems as if they do it in excess. Many, if not all the time, they will blast their horns excessively so as to purposely wake up the residents in the area. Again, I understand there is a requirement to sound their horns, but the way they are doing it suggests otherwise. The duration and volume of the horns are more than necessary; they're way too loud and excessive. Please address this issue in the meantime as there is still quite a long ways to go before this project would get approved and built. Please update this post as this is addressed and please do not close until this excessive and unnecessarily boisterous sound is addressed. It is nighttime. There is little to no other noise, the decibels can at least be lowered by 50% and STILL be heard a mile away.
