Thank you for contacting the City of Huntsville Traffic Engineering. Staff is aware of the need to make wide right turns for the north to east movement. We have revisited the site and determined that the placement of the stop bar (westbound) does not pose any issue. Please note that prior to the stop bars being placed, vehicles still had to make the wide right turn in order to negotiate the corner. Converting it to a Multi-Stop intersection has reduced approach speeds, which further enables drivers to make the required movement once vehicles have stopped. In some situations, like in many locations in the city, a driver may have to wait for a vehicle to pass before they can make a turn, which may apply at this location during peak hours. You need to come back and revisit it again because it is tearing people's tires up and there are Tire treads in the lawn next to the Culvert that is sticking up. Before it became a four-way stop sign you were able to make a wide right turn from Cahaba on to Mythewood but now you can't expecially when there's multiple cars are stacked up going west on Cahaba. Telling us to wait for the cars to clear defeats the purpose of it becoming a four way stop .The Culvert needs to be removed or smoothed off because it's tearing tires up.

The Traffic Engineering Division acknowledges that the cross-section of Mythewood Drive is narrower than many standard-width residential streets in Huntsville, and as such, right turns from side streets onto Mythewood must often "swing wide", especially with larger vehicles. Again, this was the case prior to the Multi-Way Stop's installation. Prior to the Multi-Way Stop, if a northbound driver at Cahaba wished to turn right towards the Parkway on Mythewood, the driver might have to wait for the westbound car - or a series of cars - to pass before the driver could execute the turn. What has changed with the Multi-Way Stop is that a westbound vehicle - or vehicles - might now be stopped and queued at the STOP sign. As with the previous situation, with a line of vehicles approaching the intersection, the northbound right-turning driver might need to wait until those vehicles pass through the intersection. If anything, this is a safer situation, since the westbound vehicles at the intersection are now stopped and queued, versus approaching the intersection at 30 miles per hour or so. For this reason, no changes to the locations of the stop lines, or other striping, are supported.

Again we're not complaining about the four-way stop we're complaining about the Culvert that is sticking up out of the yard that is right next to the road. We did not have a problem with the Culvert before because we were able to swing wider when it was clear. Since you made a four-way stop we are unable to utilize it like it's supposed to be used since you have a culvert that is sticking straight out and going to slice your tires . The city needs to take care and remove the Culvert or redo the Culvert so the sharp edge does not ruin more people's tires . It took the city 3 years to make it a four-way stop with the neighborhood requesting it and I guess it's going to take another 3 years before y'all will acknowledge that it is ruining people's tires.

Traffic Engineering has made contact with Public Works Services about this issue.
PWS has determined that they can modify this culvert's headwall and make a small asphalt repair to the edge of pavement. As soon as they can schedule the work, they will make these repairs.

Public Works Services has completed their work at this intersection. They have modified the drain and added asphalt to facilitate the right turn.
