This is a good idea. While there technically is a (unpainted) crosswalk extending from the sidewalk on the entrance road between the Wells Fargo and the Safeway Gas Station, I have rarely seen cars yield to pedestrians there as they are supposed to. They are zooming down this "boulevard" rather quickly — I'm sure more than 25MPH. A strongly painted crosswalk would help. A traffic light would be even better!

Considering a woman was killed by a car at the very location where this request is being made, and in agreement that many people cross the street here, a lighted, very visible crosswalk in this section is especially important.

Requests for many transportation issues, including stop signs, curb painting, and traffic calming measures, typically require 8-12 weeks to complete before staff can develop a recommendation. These requests involve review of current plans and policies, compilation of accident and/or other history, coordinating with Alameda Police and other stakeholders, outreach to residents or others who may be affected by the proposed change, on-site data collection and analysis, and sometimes consultation with outside experts.

I will follow up with you about your request when your request is at the top of the queue. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, there is a backlog of these requests and they are being handled in the order of receipt. Due to that backlog, some requests may take six months to a year to complete the analysis and recommendation.

Since this is not an intersection there is no implied crosswalk here. I think it would be great to put a mid-street crosswalk here so that people do not have to risk life and limb jaywalking at this location.

Hamon: The city can not go around placing crosswalks everywhere there are people jaywalking. Furthermore, when people do jaywalk at this location, it is almost completely pointless, because it's not like there is a bridge to get across the lagoon anyways. New crosswalks need to be accompanied by studies and a need; not simply because someone wants the city to perform pointless work.

This is not jaywalking guys. This is a "T" intersection between Otis and the South Shore entry street. Since people are obviously crossing there — don't forget that there are huge apartment complexes there right next to the lagoon — it needs to be made safer. Clearly there is a need, though of course the city will go through its procedures for making sure that it indeed makes sense.

djw: Based upon your explanation, it appears that you are a resident of one of the apartment complexes across the street. Therefore, when you are heading over to Safeway, how much time does it add to your walk, when you use the designated crosswalk at Otis Drive and S. Shore Ctr?

Mario: Actually I don't live at the apartment; I prefer to walk up Otis on the nice (and often sunny) side of the street rather than by the Walgreens & the megabanks.

At this time, we do not recommend installing a marked crosswalk at this location. Otis Drive is currently a four lane road and is not controlled by a traffic signal or stop signs. If/when this location is reviewed for a traffic signal, we will revisit this request.
