I reported the lack of a 4-way stop sign during construction months ago. NOW that it is FINISHED - - it is MUCH WORSE - - people NOT SURE what's going on there - - THERE WILL BE MORE WRECKS - - it took YEARS for Salem to ADMIT they had a PROBLEM with this intersection and made it 4-WAY STOP - - I appreciate that they HAVE tried to ALLEVIATE the problem - - BUT - - I think they will find that a SIMPLE 4-WAY STOP is SAFER than the CONFUSED SPAGHETTI INTERSECTION this has become - - sometimes TOO MUCH PLANNING is TOO MUCH PLANNING

I wholeheartedly agree. I've driven this intersection for 35 years and it's more unsafe then ever. I don't have a solution but I hope somebody does.

The traffic configuration at this intersection is beyond frightening. Sign placement adds to problem. Hopefully the city will resolve this issue before a tragedy occurs.

Who is it? What person/dept that is in charge of traffic or intersection design? I to see a big issue with this intersection BUT ALSO other problem intersections in Salem. It's like NO where else. I would love to see new STOP signs (computer tech makes it easy, cheep) that are MORE visible about the type of intersection - 4way Stop, 3way Stop - not a guessing game by those who stop and are waiting and waiting to go because others take advantage. Some Stop Signs are Back to Back with other types of signs. The shape of the sign is world-wide standard - The color also. A big white Cross over 4way stop sign could help. A white peace sign over 3way stop sign would help greatly....NO?

I would like to know the NAME of the ENGINEER and the engineering company that DESIGNED this intersection - - - PAY ATTENTION - - years AGO it was a deadly intersection - - then - FINALLY - after a LOT of argument in the City Council, it was mad a FOUR-WAY STOP. Since reconstruction it has been changed more than once - but - - IT IS STILL DANGEROUS

PAY ATTENTION - - YOU - - GET IN YOUR CAR and drive from TREMONT st. in Salem down GROVE STREET to this intersection - - -come to a stop at the stop sign at the Grove St./Harmony Grove Rd. intersection - - now - - OPEN YOUR EYES - - WHAT DO YOU SEE IN FRONT OF YOU? - - if you look CLOSELY you will see ANOTHER stop sign about 50 yards ahead of you - - SO - - you have to STOP TWICE in 50 YARDS just to GO STRAIGHT? - - THIS is BAD ENGINEERING anywhere in the country. Simple Solution. 1. Take DOWN that SILLY SECOND STOP SIGN 2. Put it BACK on the pole in front of the MOOSE CLUB - - thus making it a SIMPLE FOUR-WAY STOP AGAIN. - - Then - - put up WARNING SIGNS of SIGN CHANGE on all approaches for the SPECIFIED NUMBER OF DAYS - - then - - post a patrol car to ISSUE TICKETS to people who STILL don't understand a SIMPLE 4-WAY STOP. R U kidding? I am also appauled at the intersections in Salem But it seems that your sugesting LOGIC and safety being first and foremost. BUT Salem has to think about tourism and ticketing to raise revenue and many more issues....... Well, I cant think of anythn else that could influence decisions about traffic control, but i do know that you see-click-fix account can get tricky? Like password wont work and cant get new one .... "SIMPLE 4-WAY STOP" is not SIMPLE if you think it is try coming into it from a different direction the whole thing is a disaster !!!!!!!!!

TRUE - - but - - of ALL the things that have been TRIED - - simple 4-way stop puts the BURDEN on EACH direction - - and NO TWO STOP SIGNS in 50 yards from ANY direction.

FYI 50 yards is 1/2 of a football field, what is needed is what we had a balanced intersection where everyone can see everyone else. even when it seems clear you get people darting down from Mason, when entering from Grove the corner break to Mason makes for a blind spot, and when you try to see what's coming from the left you get pounced on from Harmony on the right. Was it created to help supplement insurance companies with rate increases!

I stand corrected - - LESS THAN 50 YARDS - - which is TOO CLOSE to have TWO STOP SIGNS on the same street.

If boston street were one way grove one way. Treamont onw way mason and flint. Traffi two lanea 30 all direction parking both sides with neighbor hoods streets organized this would help. Traffic in salem and peabosy at each end have three ways for cars r

On Tremont st. at Grove st. we got a stop sign that only one out of 5 cars stop at "simple solution would be to remove the stop signs on Tremont near Grove and Japonica and turn Grove st. into a one-way going toward Harmony Grove.rd. and remove the stop signs at Grove st and Harmony Grove rd. intersection and put lights in down there. Honestly what do we pay our taxes for when in part they are used for roads and keeping us safe??

There has to be a Logical reason for "Poorly designed" intersections in Salem. No other surounding city has intersections that leave drivers confused and fending for themselves. A google search for "Speed trap" - more common term - brings up wealth of info. Many cities have at least one predictable "Bad" intersection that is staked out as needed (instead of correcting for safety) to ticket drivers and bring in needed revenue. Traffic tickets are a multi-billion industry. Revenue is shared by local and state government and all moving violations are a surchargable offence to generate even more income for the state and insurance cos who then hike up our premiums. One tiny town got half its yearly income from a tickets alone on small stretch of highway for drivers only passing through until that town was caught. Some cities "Fix" intersections by the timing of the lights Or stop signs posted at hard to see intersection - surprise, surprise. YET a good driver can contested theirs ticket by knowing a few laws (Manual - Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and reviewing the road or intersection where they got ticketed. Just a thought....

I'm sure the creator of this mess has already been compensated. .... Now he or she should be responsible for correcting their error. Compensation should have been withheld until the project was "satisfactorily completed". I would hope the individual responsible will NOT be involved in any other city "IMPROVEMENTS".

Here is a HELP for the problem until it has been RETURNED to a SIMPLE 4-WAY STOP - - - EVERY CAR should SOUND ITS HORN until it is COMPLETELY THROUGH THE INTERSECTION - - for SAFETY - - then - -the COMPLAINTS of the NEIGHBORS might get some attention.

My guess is that the city hired an outside traffic consultant to design this mess .Thats what they always do at the taxpayers expense of course. The only response from the city in this thread is to bump it from DPS to engineering and soon it will be closed.

The fact of the matter is that the city administration IS responsible for the result. If the job was contracted out.....it makes NO DIFFERENCE. City government is where the buck stops and where the resolution needs to begin! It's time the politicians stepped up and did their job.

Wouldnt it be better to contact your ward councilor. The DPW can only fix broken signs. Venting here is like talking to yourselves.

A lot of things that were tried in the past to get action only wound up in the circular file so their job wouldn't get more complicated.

Someone at DPW named Guest or another name for Anonymous says: "Venting here is like talking to yourselves..... So, according to Anonymous citizens should skip their comments here... talk to their ward councilor - a better solution..... I guess people like to see it in writing.
