Deskripsyon

The intersection of Fountain St. and Central Ave. has a very visible No Turn on Red sign facing Central Ave., and yet almost every day, I witness motorists illegally turning right on red here. I also see this elsewhere throughout the city. Has anyone else noticed this blatant disregard for No Turn on Red signs? If police were posted at these intersections, they could ticket people all day for this.

Yet another case of trying to address the effect of a problem rather than the cause. WHY are motorists making illegal "right on red" turns throughout the City? I know - because the lights do not function properly. The solution is NOT to install yet more questionable technology such as red light cameras, installing traffic "calming" measures or consuming police resources by stationing officers at intersections to issue tickets. No. The permanent solution is to understand why the traffic signal management systems are not functioning as they were intended to when the City purchased them - hold the vendor responsible and fix them. Drive around other towns who've been using smart lights since the mid 1980s - why do theirs work and ours don't? How about modifying the street smart slogan in New Haven to "safe streets take smart lights"?

Okay, but just because we don't have "smart lights", does that mean that we don't have to obey traffic rules? Regardless of the cause of the problem, the fact is that people break the traffic rules all the time, and we can't just wait until we have an ideal solution. If somebody kills a pedestrian because they made an illegal turn, is that the city's fault for not having "smart lights"? I don't think so.

Okay, but regardless of whether we have "smart lights",
the fact remains that drivers are breaking traffic rules all the time. I see drivers go straight on red, left on red, and illegal right turns. If a red light lasts 30 seconds longer than you want it to, does that mean you can then disregard it? We can't just wait for an ideal solution - there isn't one. If a pedestrian gets killed by a driver making an illegal turn, is that the City's fault? If only because of a lack of traffic enforcement.
