Newly installed right turn signal on Little Patuxent, turning right onto Broken Land is causing backups. In the a.m., I see traffic backs up to the fire house waiting to turn right. I travel that intersection every week day. There are no pedestrians to be found during the morning rush hour. Now I witness impatient drivers coming down to the light in the straight through lane and turning right alongside those in the right turn lane. Suggest a blinking right turn on red light that goes solid should a pedestrian press the crosswalk button.

At 9:15am today the red arrow was on with no traffic coming from anywhere for 30 seconds. Couldn’t make a right turn but the car back up went from three to ten in that 30 seconds.
I took a picture at noon today same situation. No traffic moving from any of the intersections and seven cars waiting to make a right turn from Little Patuxent yo Broken Land.
Those red arrows are a nuisance and time consuming.

The traffic backs up to Governor Warfield.
Cars in the middle lane are now turning right on the green light. Not waiting in line in the right lane for the green arrow.

Thank you for contacting DPW – Traffic Division about your concern regarding Little Patuxent Parkway eastbound traffic backing up from Broken Land Parkway signal to the signal at Banneker Rd/Governor Warfield Pkwy.
The signal phasing for eastbound LPP right turn movement onto southbound BLP was implemented because of recurring crashes and near misses encountered due to vehicular traffic failing to yield right-of-way to the pedestrians and bicycles utilizing the crosswalk located on the south side of LPP. In acknowledgement of the heavy right turn movement at LPP/BLP, the phasing (or the right turn green arrow) for eastbound LPP was programmed to come up twice within the same cycle to help dissipate the long queues that build up, especially during AM and PM rush hours. The movement is first serviced a green arrow concurrently with the green for the eastbound LPP through movement and then continues to stay on green arrow concurrently with the green for northbound BLP. If a pedestrian activates the pushbutton to cross the south leg of BLP, the first half of the right turn green arrow will be skipped (which reduces time for the right turn movement) to provide a protected pedestrian movement across BLP.
Based on recent observations during rush hour, this right turn movement operated well with almost all vehicles clearing the queue (including the queue that spilled out to into the right through lane) every time, however, as you mentioned, occasional queues would back up close to the Banneker/GWP signal when the pedestrian pushbutton was activated to cross BLP that reduces the time allocated to service the right turn movement from eastbound LPP onto southbound BLP . But, these extended queues were noted to dissipate quickly in the absence of pedestrian activity on the south leg of the intersection. At this time, no further improvement is recommended at this time, but we will continue to monitor this location moving forward.

I’ve seen it at least twice.
I don’t know how many pedestrians cross there because at any time I’ve driven by there’s nobody crossing anywhere.
