oh god, yes please. every day on my 3 mile drive to work, I encounter NO LESS THAN 5 RED LIGHT RUNNERS. I've seen it happen in front of the police and they don't care. People stopping in the middle of the roadway for no reason, people turning right out of the left turn lane, etc. Can we PLEASE get HPD to enforce the traffic laws in this city?

Not to mention those that love to drive freeway speeds in 40mph zones. (Bob wallace betwen Jordan and 565/Sparkman is ESPECIALLY bad)

Correctly painting directions like turns, speed limits and stops ahead on the roads could help alot.
Intersections like Bob Wallace/Leeman Ferry and the parkway are so out of hand that I even see cops cutting across solid lines and cut through parking lots just to get to the gas pumps.
Getting more cops involved isn't the solution in my opinion.
The issue needs to be resolved, not punished.
Reduce the amount of signage on the road sides that distract drivers to the sides and not the road by putting it all in our lanes keeps eyes on the roads and helps drivers watch where they are going.
ALSO: When a crosswalk light shows for walkers to walk, the traffic lights ALL show that traffic can turn and cross the walk being crossed by walkers.
The fundamental dynamics need an intelligent revamp....not add cops to treat us civilized people like cattle and numbers.
Being born and raised here, I assure you that adjustments to our traffic environment would have a more lasting and positive impact on our community as a whole.

I appreciate wheeeeee you're coming from, Bree, however none of that will stop the red light runners or the speeders, or the people treating the center turn lanes like their own personal lane.

We need traffic enforcement AND an intelligent review.

Maybe coordinate it with the beginning of school, like a week or two on each side. Publicize it like the state troopers do around the holidays, hit the school zones really hard, etc.

HPD seems to run a school zone campaign for like the first week or so of school, and then disappear leaving people to once again speed, run red lights, and other unsafe practices in those areas. This needs to be a consistent enforcement campaign, not just limited to schools or school zones, but everywhere.

Right, definitely agree! I know HPD isn't like the following because they're a police department, but it feels like (again, it *feels* like), they don't care whether people obey the traffic laws or not. I know they do care, but based on the number of officers I see that are out enforcing the traffic laws, it feels like they don't.

HPD conducts many traffic enforcement details throughout the year. Some of these are grant funded and the areas targeted are based on statistics from the state (accidents, traffic fatalities, etc.). The current grant-funded detail ends in September with the next one beginning in October. The HPD Traffic Task Force also conducts details throughout the city on their shifts. Cost alot less if they were stationed at intersections....even an empty cop car.
And when one ticket cost the driver $240 per ticket and the cop gets paid less than $15 an hour, one would think that the tickets themselves pay for the enforcement....or is that too much like doing something right????

I agree Bree. It does seem like the enforcement should be able to pay for itself.
