The way Berkeley has protected the greenway at Folger Ave. intersection (just 1 block north of 67th street) is completely different from what Emeryville has done. I've seen cars drive through at near freeway speeds nearly ten seconds before a mother pushing a stroller entered the crosswalk. These three intersections are dangerous.

Yes, please, please put in lights, speed bumps, something! Too many drivers crossing what is essentially a public park frequented by pets and small children are treating it like an expressway.

Lots of cars speeding in this area ans many do not notice stop signs. Please address this issue. Thank you.

Thanks for reporting these concerns, they’ve been a known issue for some time so it’s very upsetting to hear that yet another person has been hit while crossing here.

Emeryville won a $265k state grant to upgrade all of the street crossings along the greenway at 65th, 66th, and 67th street, and late last year was given the go-ahead by Caltrans to expedite the implementation of this project for construction in the 2018-19 fiscal year. Perhaps someone from the city can comment here with the latest on the project status, but here is the summary description:

“The Emeryville Bicycle & Pedestrian Greenway Safety & Mobility Improvement Project will improve Emeryville’s existing Greenway trail crossings at 65th, 66th, and 67th with raised crosswalks, RRFBs (rapid flashing beacons), parking adjustments, striping and signage. The project will also add a bike share station to the existing regional bike share network and a bike/ped counter.”

It’s also worth mentioning that the state funding for this project was made possible via the new SB1 gas tax, which will be on the November ballot for repeal. So if the repeal passes it might be possible that this funding will disappear, but I don’t know.

The City of Emeryville has received a grant to upgrade these crossings with flashing beacons activated by bike sensors and ped pushbuttons, raised crosswalks, and improved signage. Construction will be in this coming fiscal year.

On one hand, this is great news that the situation will be fixed in the coming fiscal year. On the other hand, it seems like the problem is still here and is still very dangerous for the next 12 to 24 months depending on how fiscal year is counted.

I don't think the City of Emeryville should close the issue now. I think a short -term fix should be implemented like install brighter or larger signs, or place yellow signs such as at Folger Ave. in Berkeley to replace our existing signs.

A confirmed fix it date by the City is critical such as completed by June 1st 2019, or June 1st 2020. That said people could truly die in these intersections between now and then and it is is clear that the current signage is too small, too faded, too obscured and not very visible from afar when drivers ramp up speed.

Agreed, at the very least this report should remain open until the grant-funded project is actually constructed.

Agreed. I meant to "thank" the city for responding, not for "fixing" this request. I too think the situation should be addressed with a temporary solution, before the grant funding work kicks in.

I should have mentioned that the City is planning an interim improvement later this summer; delineators will be installed on the centerline leading up to the crosswalks to provide a narrowing/slowing for approaching vehicles.

A few things: 1) I think we should keep this issue open until the interim fix is in and I will invite others from the neighborhood. I really want the City to know many people really want a fix immediately; 2) What about better signage, including up and down the entire street? Seems currently substandard and like it would also be part of interim improvement; and 3) We'll consider deadline by end of summer, September 22, 2018.

Stephen, the citywide paving going on right now is separate from the state-funded Greenway Crossings project. I believe the state grant funding is allocated for fiscal year 2018-19, so hopefully we will see the project bid out to a contractor soon, with construction starting not too long after.

Little has been done here. Interim fix is very weak. Configurations being changed without a good result. Other cities have superior systems in pace just blocks away. No police presence or patrols. Even today we had a car run trough at freeway speeds (Lotus CA 8CUE785) and police arrive, they don't answer the door at 153 City Limits Circle and then and nothing happens. At this rate it is possible nothing substantial will happen there is a death. It is so unfortunate because with the many close calls that me and my neighbors have witnessed, this is a real possibility, not too far of a stretch.

These intersections on the Greenway need stop signs. Anything else will not do anything to deter speeding vehicles. I've seen a bicyclist get hit and several near misses with pedestrians.
