STOP sign application is regulated by federal guidelines. STOP sign should be installed in a manner that minimizes the numbers of vehicles having to stop. In most cases, the street carrying the lowest volume of traffic should be stopped. In order to qualify for a multiway STOP control, the combined vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle volume entering the intersection from the minor street approaches (total of both approaches) averages at least 200 units per hour for 8 hours during a day. A traffic count request is sent out today May 8th, 2018. Please allow 6-8 weeks for the warrant analysis to be completed.

The originating request was based on a safety concern. Placement of a stop sign is not based solely on traffic volume. High speeds, restricted view, or crash records are legitimate reasons to establish a need for traffic control using stop signs. The originating request noted the former two, and none of the comments provided to-date address any of the original safety issues. The original posting was made after speaking with a Howard County policeman who was present at the Lynngate-Beaverbrook intersection. It was the policeman who identified the SeeClickFix interface as the proper mechanism to request the stop signs. Furthermore, the policeman indicated that the restricted viewing circumstances at the intersection likely warranted the requested stop signs regardless of traffic volumes. If stop signs are rejected, please consider alternative traffic-calming devices, e.g., a speed hump south of the intersection.
