Description
I would like to report a health hazard issue arising from pigeons nesting in our backyard. All the winows are full of bird droppings (see the attached picture), at least once a month I have to remove a dead pigeons from the ground and put it into garbage. I am the lanlord of the property and I would like to keep the property clean and healthy. But the invasion by pigeons is excessive. I know that ii is illegal to poison them so I will not undertake anything. But the amount of bird droppings is really a health issue. Looking out of the window, we have to face the whole house wall defaced with bird droppings. I am writing to report a really serious issue hoping that the city can advice me what do do. I can install bird spikes on my property (which I already did partly), but I can not force my neighbor to do the same. Even in some public spaces in Jersey City, one has to be careful where one is walking. Occasionally the area is so polluted with bird droppings that I prefer not to walk in these streets.
The population of pigeons in Jersey City needs to be controlled in order to prevent diseases and excessive bird droppings.

Bird spikes are a good first step in resolving the issue of droppings on the house. For more information on controlling pigeon issues, see http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/pigeons/tips/solving_problems_pigeons.html

Bird spikes are indeed a good first step. However, at a cost of over $20 for just one bird spike for one window, covering the more than 70 windows of our building with bird spikes quickly becomes a cost issue. Covering all windows in Jersey City with bird spikes is a cost of many million Dollars. How about prohibiting the feeding of pigeons ? In addition, can we demand that neighbors install bird spikes in their windows ? In order to be effective, ALL windows need to covered, not just a few windows. If only a few windows are covered, pigeons will migrate to the next window without bird spikes.
Jersey City has in my opinion an animal problem. Too many cats in the streets, racoons at night, armies of pigeons at many places. And then there all these lonely people who spend their money of feeding cats, pigeons and other homeless animals. The situation is indeed complicated. I guess I will have to continue to live with defaced walls and a backyard full of feathers and bird droppings.
Nothing really can be done about this.

By installing the spikes on your own windows, you can resolve the droppings on your own property - which may encourage your neighbors to do the same.
