  There are public restrooms in the building between the playgrounds. Last I checked, two years ago, it was supposed to be left open so that the preschoolers could use it when they went to the playground. My daughter's preschool teacher said it was supposed to be left open all day. One of the maintenance people said they closed it when the preschoolers left because there had been vandalism in the past. I asked how recently and he said several years.

  So there may have been a vandalism issue when Island High housed there. I don't think this is a problem with the NEA and ACLC kids. I haven't seen graffiti since they arrived.

  The interesting thing is that without restrooms people are less likely to take kids there. We've lived a block away for my daughter's whole life and it has never been out goto park because of the restroom issue. But empty parks invite vandalism.

  The bathrooms have never been open when I am there with my kids on the weekends or weekdays during daylight hours.

  We have tried to open these restrooms at various times since built and they become non-usable due miss-use. I have also given keys out to various groups and residents. We are willing to try again but I will talk with Recreation to see what hours. The hours will then be posted as well as restroom signs. If this doesn't work and they get destroyed, you will need to get a key from me and we will need to keep them locked for limited use only.

  I didn't know that getting a key was an option! I would love to have a key. This is my neighborhood park and I bring my kids there all the time. How can I get a key?

  Lauren, did you get a key? We are going to a bday party there today and I'm wishing I had tried to get one last week. Can anyone open the restroom noon-4 today? Is there anything I can do to make this happen? 510-637-8434.

  I didn't get a key yet. I'm still waiting to hear back from the parks manager about the key.

  It used to be that you could call and let ARPD know if there was a problem at the parks. I once called to report a broken, and spewing, drinking fountain and someone showed up to fix it in under 10 minutes. For the past few years it goes to vm and the mailbox is always full. I have tried to report things at least three times. I just tried that number in hopes of getting the restroom opened for the duration of my nephew's party, but again, mailbox is full.
