Description
People traveling North on 1st ave N and about to turn west onto N.155th do not know that it is okay to use the median as a temporary turn lane.
This causes a large back up of cars, some wanting to turn right (or east) because the first car in the queue is unwilling to pull into the median lane.
The median lanes are exactly for this purpose: you pull into that lane, come to a stop, and when it's safe to do so you merge onto westbound N. 155th.

Thanks for writing in about educating drivers on the use of the two way left turn lane. The City of Shoreline is required to follow federal standards for signs and unfortunately, there is no standard sign related to educating drivers about the use of the two way left turn lane. One of the operating principles of traffic signs is to minimize use to only what’s necessary as sign clutter can cause drivers to ignore signs, or simply not have the ability to process all the messages on them. In addition, sometimes drivers simply don’t feel comfortable using the two way left turn lane and make the choice not to. I will contact our communications department about putting an educational piece into Shoreline’s Currents mailing. Thanks.
