Definitely agree with you, Eric. However, i do believe these improvements are part of a much larger capital plan. Any other short term solutions?

The little-used bridge across I-40 at Old Reedy Creek Road (runs past Lake Crabtree into the South side of Umstead State Park) has very similar guardrails with no raised sidewalks. The DOT added bolt-on height extensions attaching at the mounting bolts for the original guardrail stanchions - I will post a picture next time I ride over the bridge. Much safer for the runners and bikers that ride across the bridge every day!

Your comment echoes my worry that this issue will be put off until a major rebuild effort is scheduled for the Airport Blvd bridge. I seem to remember the Legislature inserting some language a couple of years back that pedestrian and bike improvements were no longer funded at the state level.

I'm surprised that something awful has not happened already in this location, and hope that the streak continues. But as they say, hope is not a plan.

Still no movement on this dangerous situation. Next exit east is under construction making the traffic much worse in this location. Regularly seeing homeless people walking across this bridge to get to their spots on the exit ramps with no room alongside busy car lanes. This is irresponsible.

Wow, 1441 days with no response. It sure seems that right now, with most people staying home because of the Virus lockdown, would be the perfect time for the DOT to be working on big construction projects. But that is not the way we do things in North Carolina. Holding out for perfect solutions is not a useful plan, we can mitigate the things that are dangerous while we work on longer term and better fixes.

I've withheld comment until the project was well underway, but the NC DOT is now replacing the entire troublesome bridge! While it remains to be seen what sort of pedestrian and bicycle accommodations are included, kudos to NC DOT for now.
