NCDOT has Hillsborough Street closed again, and the westbound detour requires cars to turn left onto Trinity Rd... The left turn signal is only up for 11 seconds out of 105 second light cycles - traffic backs up because the left arrow immediately turns red, even when there is no other traffic. Yesterday I counted 28 cars waiting at 3pm. Can we get this light re-timed?

Beryl Rd & Blue Ridge Rd Raleigh, NC, 27606, USA - West

DOT now has both Hillsborough Street AND Beryl closed - there's no way to get past the fairgrounds without detouring to Western Blvd (1.6 miles and two long traffic lights). God help you if you're on a bicycle.

The Hillsborough street detour is not much better - it adds 1.4 miles to go around the DOT construction.

Is it possible to get better signage on these detours? To swap stop signs for yield signs at right turns where the road is closed on the left? To list how long the roads will be closed? To identify temporary alternate safe bike routes (maybe using private drives)?

I realize that NC DOT is not equipped to communicate effectively in these situations, but perhaps the city can step up and ease some of this pain. Beryl and Hillsborough streets are (were) a major East/West corridor, and Wade Avenue continues to be a construction site.

House Creek greenway is blocked by Pike Electrical equipment. When we came through at 4:15pm it was already abandoned for the night. If there had been workers I'm sure the entire area would have been off limits. I realize that Duke Energy contractors are treated carefully by the city, so perhaps this would be useful for future requests - please ask them to not ignore our greenways, or worse, use them for overnight parking areas.

There's a long dark tunnel with mud here, and you emerge to an immediate big step up to the wooden ramp that ascends under the RR track... asphalt ramp/patch has big chunk missing near the center. When you come out of the dark you can't see this, even moving slowly on my bike it tossed me into the air and I nearly crashed.

Umstead State Park is a very popular and safe area for bicyclists, but it is impossible to get across the airport from Umstead to to Briar Creek area. Adding a short bike rout connecting Umstead to existing airport roads would make a great path for riders and commuters between Raleigh and Briar Creek (and some parts of RTP as well!).

With the current greenway connections, the only way for a biker to get from this end of Umstead to Briar Creek is to ride south to 54 and then west and back up to Page Road to cross under the freeway - lots of extra mileage and annoyed drivers on that route.

Recent news coverage of the RDU airport authority planning process makes them appear very anti-bicycle. Adding to the greenway paths to allow transit across the airport would be a good idea to repair their image with Triangle bicyclists.

Finally, it would improve security for the airport. Bicyclists carry cellphones and would be quick to report odd activities in areas that are not easy for airport security to patrol.

One of our recent thunderstorms has washed a load of sand and gravel out of a property driveway near the entrance to Umstead Park - and deposited it on the greenway. The debris runs diagonally across the path for about 20 yards. Treacherous for bike riders, and no clear path across. Thanks!
  • 2205 Evans Road Cary, North Carolina - Cary

Along this stretch of Evans road there is a guardrail directly above the curbing, resulting in very little room to maneuver for cars or bikes in traffic. One section of the guardrail was damaged in an accident more than seven years ago and presents some sharp edges to cyclists that are riding close to the side of the road.

Given the location on this wetland causeway next to Lake Crabtree and age of the problem there may be a jurisdiction issue, or maybe it just fell through the cracks years ago and will be quickly repaired.

BTW, the support posts for this railing all have sharp edges extending above the horizontal barriers - if a biker or motorcyclist is forced off the road over this railing, there will be stitches required. The post height is not likely to be fixed, but maybe this will help the repair team better see the issue from a rider's perspective?

The bridge across I-40 has the older-low-style guardrails - these are about mid-thigh for pedestrians and dangerously low for bikers, plus there is no sidewalk or bike lane allocated. Traffic is moving at a high rate through here, and I see pedestrians and bikers daily trying to make their way across -

The bridge across Wade Avenue has the older-low-style guardrails - these are about mid-thigh for pedestrians and dangerously low for bikers, plus there is no sidewalk or bike lane allocated. With the new expanded parking at NCMA there will be more pedestrian traffic across this bridge to the stadium and state fairgrounds.

Contractor has placed a large concrete culvert across the greenway with loose gravel piled around it - very dangerous for bikers and children. Blockage has been in place for at least 8 weeks (attached pic was taken April 5). Site prep on property next door continues. CF Evans Construction is listed on the fencing around the property. A more effective bridge across the blockage should be installed.
