I live towards the crest of the Mandana hill and anywhere around there is extremely dangerous for me to cross since cars can't see over the crest. Unfortunately, in the last few years, cars have been going faster and faster and move like they're on an expressway instead of a neighborhood street. I find it very difficult to cross safely. Drivers often honk at me as I walk across even when they see me from far away and I believe I should legally have the right of way.

I would welcome investigation into the possibility of crosswalks at the streets mentioned above as well as possibly at Warfield. Any of those would be helpful to slow the traffic to safe speeds for pedestrians.

I live at 525 Mandana. This is a condominium building with 38 units. We are just over the crest of the hill on the Lakeshore side. This is a "blind" hill if you are coming up from Grand, you can't see over the top of it. I agree with Kdavh above. The traffic on Mandana between Grand and Lakeshore has dramatically increased in the last few years as more and more cars use it as a shortcut. The speed has also increased. It might be helpful if the city monitored the traffic to get an idea of the car use and the speed. It is almost impossible to cross the street on the weekends and during weekday commute hours. Crosswalks would be extremely helpful as well as one of the temporary speed indicator signs.

In addition to pedestrians, cars also turn onto Mandana Blvd. from adjoining side streets. Those on the Grand Ave. side of the hill can't see cars coming from Lakeshore and those on the Lakeshore side can't see cars coming from Grand Ave. I would like to see a posted 25 MPH speed limit for that area with a police officer posted nearby occasionally so driver will know that there are consequences for speeding up that hill.

I also live at 525 Mandana, and like to see a speed limit posted, and crossing areas designated for pedestrians. Especially older people have a difficult time avoiding traffic. One never knows when a car approaching from either side.
An additional benefit of a speed limit would be, that residents in my building, could enter and leave the garage safer.

I'm at Mandana and Warfield, and I agree. Traffic is heavy and it has become very fast. This is not a street on which you would want to raise your kids.

I live on Walker near Fairbanks/Bouleard Way and frequently need to walk across Mandana. Doing so is very dangerous, as cars coming over the crest of the hill speed down. We also have to contend with traffic feeding in from the street the angles into Mandana just above Walker so need to watch for three different directions of traffic. Crosswalks are long overdue.

I live at Warfield and Mandana and it's incredibly dangerous to cross the street during any time of the day. I very strongly support adding signs and crosswalks along Mandana at a few points, including the crest of the hill (Warfield). It is unreasonable for residents to have to walk all the way down the hill to the crosswalk on Grand or Lakeshore and then all the way back up the hill again just to cross the street safely.

I support all the previous comments for signs and crosswalks (maybe speed bumps?) to increase safety near Mandana. I often cross Mandana at Walker Ave and it takes awhile before one can safely get across. If I ever walk over to Lakeshore, I only cross Mandana at Lakeshore - way too dangerous to cross near the crest of the hill. One should consider adding crosswalks across Mandana as well as across Vermont where it runs into Mandana as cars turning that corner toward Grand Ave look only up the hill and do not always realize there are cars turning off of Walker onto Mandana, as well as pedestrians scurrying across Mandana at Walker a few feet down as well as walking up the hill hidden behind that large palm tree.

So many people need to cross at the top every morning to get to buses and carpool and it is extremely dangerous. In addition to crosswalks I am hoping for a speed bump or flashing pedestrian lights or something else to slow down traffic. It is a complete blind spot on both sides as you get to the crest of the hill and people just fly over it without regard to pedestrians that might be just on the other side. Its not only pedestrians that are a concern. If I am heading west on Warfield in my car and need to take a left onto Mandana it is virtually impossible without risk of an accident. I always have to drive around the entire area to get to lakeshore in my car because it is too dangerous to take a left there. People are simply driving way too fast over the crest of the hill.

I also lived at 525 Mandana for a few years and now live around the corner on Weldon/Vermont. The benefit of living in this vibrant, thriving neighborhood is its walkability to services, shops, public spaces and adjoining neighborhoods. At the same time, during the two-year period I resided on Mandana, it became nearly impossible to cross Mandana, much the less make turns onto side streets or into a garage, due to the speed and volume of traffic. Many local residents rely on the ability to walk to and from our regular "stops" for errands and the like. Crosswalks at all major intersections between Grand Ave and Lakeshore would really improve the safety and walkability of the neighborhood for both residents and visitors.

I live on Vermont and cross Manadana on a daily basis with my 2 yr old twins in their stroller. There is never a day that I don't worry about crossing the street there. There is also a need for a curb cut on the Grand Avenue side of Vermont. Currently, there are only a set of stairs down to Walker and a raised curb.

I completely agree! It's a little frightening crossing at any point in Mandana. Cars don't pay much attention, and the angle of the hill makes it difficult to see pedestrians sometimes. A crosswalk, perhaps one with pedestrian crossing lights, would be much appreciated!

In adddition to all of the above, Mandana also must be repaved--sooner rather than later. Potholes have been opening up on Mandana for years, and as soon as one is patched, another one opens up right next to it. During the last rainy season, whole parts of the roadway crumbled into gravel. Now that the rains have come again, this will happen more and more often. With the cars flying up and down the hill, the potholes create a very dangerous situation as cars going at high speed either hit them or veer to miss them.

Given that one of the main problems with crossing Mandana is the blind spots for drivers, I would be concerned that a crosswalk would only serve to give pedestrians a false sense of security in crossing. I live at Walker and Mandana and think a crosswalk there would be a disaster unless accompanied by a four way stop - I do not want my kids thinking that they can cross there! I do not believe pedestrian striping would make any difference for cars speeding over the hill, as they would not see pedestrians until it is too late.

Please consider signage and a cross walk at Warfield or Walker. It's incredibly dangerous to cross this street and cars need to be prompted to slow down before the crest in the hill.

I live at 525 Mandana as well. I agree with all comments. The street has become a main road for drivers to connect to Grand and Lakeshore. Dangerous to cross, dangerous to turn left into garage, dangerous to turn either way out of garage. Without cross walks, speed bumps or other determents to speeding cars and heavy volumes, some one is going to get hurt or worse.

Cars speed up and over this hill in both directions, a crosswalk or two between lakeshore and grand would make this area much more pedestrian friendly. It is very challenging to cross safely, even if you run!

The other issue that hasn't been addressed is how cars on Mandana ignore pedestrians, never slowing or stopping.

Cars drive way too fast on Mandana Blvd and the street is very dangerous to pedestrians. Everyday I am scared that I will get run over. There needs to be speed bumps to slow cars down. In fact, this problem is the number one reason why I have considered moving out of Oakland!

I agree with all concerns about the cars flying over the crest of the hill and the difficulty of crossing at Warfield. I agree speed bumps or some other physical intervention that will force cars to slow down on Mandana should be put in place.

They need to put some huge speed bumps approaching the top of the hill so people can't fly over blind at full speed.

I live at 525 Mandana. To drive out of our garage into Mandana is very dangerous because we have no visibility of trafic coming from Grand as we are just below the crest. So we have to cross fingers and drive out into Mandana hoping no fast cars are arriving. Hoping, there is no way to know if fast driving cars are approaching. This is a real danger.

It's particularly perilous at night, during the winter. With people now using their smart phone to navigate through the neighborhood at rapid speeds during commute hours, it would also be good to consider slowing through-traffic with speed bumps.

I agree with all the comments. I have to run across the street hoping no one will run me over. I can't imagine how older people feel walking across mandana. Hopefully something is done before anyone gets seriously injured.

Google Maps has probably has figured out that the fastest way to get from southbound on Grand to eastbound on 580, or from southbound on Lakeshore to westbound on 580 is to take Mandana instead of joining the slower traffic on Lake Park.

Remember, any intersection has an unmarked crosswalk. which may be safer than marked crosswalks.

I'm on Warfield near the top of the Mandana hill. Since this ticket was filed in 2016, traffic has again increased dramatically in speed and volume. It's terrifying to cross the side streets now, since cars are now playing the guessing game with blind traffic, and pedestrians lose. Please do some enforcement and traffic calming.

@Kevin Thanks. And as soon as you step off the curb at an unmarked intersection cars should stop for you. Lot's of luck with that on Mandana. Stepping off the curb sometimes makes you a target.

This problem is ongoing and the speed/volume of cars using Mandana between Lakeshore and Grand seems to still be increasing. I live on Warfield, just a few buildings off Mandana. It is unsafe to cross Mandana as a pedestrian, and as a cyclist or driver it is scary turning onto Mandana from the side streets. We need crosswalks now. I would also welcome speed bumps and increased traffic monitoring as other posters have suggested. This is residential neighborhood with many people traveling on foot.

I live near Mandana with my two younger kids. When we need to cross this busy street there are no crosswalks for us to use on the hill area. This is very dangerous and a crosswalk with lights would be optimal. Let's do this before domebody gets injured or killed.

I originally posted this in January 2016 and nothing has been done. Public works did put up one of those temporary signs that tells you how fast you are going. However, it was done during a holiday week and the traffic was not as great as usual. After that nothing happened.

This is an ongoing problem and I would appreciate the City of Oakland making these crosswalks a priority. As the traffic on Mandana between Lakeshore and Grand has increased due to apps that redirect people from the freeway to that route, it has become more and more dangerous to cross the street.

Since the Grand "road diet", the turn onto Mandana from the Safeway side of Grand is part of the problem. When there were two lanes, there was less traffic pressure - and a left turn was far easier to make than it is today. Now, the unprotected left turn is a race against the rush of single lane traffic on the other side, pitting cars vs cars (both straight traffic and also traffic turning right from the other wise) with pedestrians in the crosshairs. This set-up encourages a racetrack mentality from the get-go.

As of this past week, I have been informed by the City that the following projects have work-orders issued for them. We don't yet have a schedule:

1. Crosswalks and signage will be added on Mandana at Erie and at Vermont
2. "Keep Clear" markings will be added to the pavement at the Mandana/Vermont/Walker intersection
3. No Parking signs on the west side of Mandana will be changed to "No Stopping Anytime". Yes, of course delivery trucks will continue to stop on that side, but the number of autos that park along there, even at the crest of the hill, continues to increase - Uber and Lyft, especially.
4. A 25MPH sign will be added to the west side of Mandana near Walker (the speed limit on this section of Mandana is 25MPH). There is already a sign coming up from Lakeshore. Yes, we have talked to OPD about enforcement, but no promises.
5. New pavement striping will be added at Mandana/Lakeshore to help reduce the left turn chaos there.

Issues that are still open:
- We are still lobbying for repaving of this section of Mandana, and an overall paving schedule for the neighborhood.
- We are waiting to hear about any results of 2017 studies done on the Grand Avenue road diet.
- We are waiting for a schedule to synchronize the lights at Grand/Mandana and Grand/Elwood, and to clarify the pavement markings in front of STAR.
- We are waiting for a schedule for a left turn light from Grand to Mandana.
- There is still no schedule for security cameras at the Walker and 580 lots.
- As far as more stop signs in the neighborhoods between Mandana and Piedmont, each issue will need to be approached separately...someone will need to 'own' an intersection and document the problems that occur there, then lobby the City to make changes.
- One way streets won't happen anytime soon.
- There are currently no plans to make changes to the way people turn from Grand into 7/11.
- It is unclear to me whether changes will be made to the way people enter into the STAR lot. I'll try and figure that one out.

Work is being started this week on the 1-5 issues above.

Crosswalks and signage were added on Mandana at Erie and Vermont/Walker on July 20, 2018. No blocking message was also added at Mandana/Walker/Vermont headed toward Grand. No Parking signs were replaced with No Stoppign signs, and a new 25MPH sign was added on Mandana headed up from Grand. YAY to all those things. Other issues listed here are deferred until 2019, but we'll continue to appropriately nag DOT and PW.

I believe that additional crosswalks should be installed with the caveat that some drivers just won't stop for pedestrians. Initial enforcement by OPD Traffic Officers is essential.
