Tonnelle Ave is a traffic sewer. Completely unsafe for pedestrians. So many parents use this route for school drop off and pick up. City would never allow these kinds of unsafe conditions downtown but it’s always a tale of two cities here in Jersey City!

I wonder if these people who are in such a hurry, are from out of town? Because most Jersey City people I know are pretty decent.

Most of the plates that give me the issue are from NJ, I yell at them most of the time what are you planning to do run the red light or hit the car in from of you because you cant turn on red there and lets not discuss the speeding!

I just want to point out that council people have two major jobs. One is legislation and the other is the budget. They do not have control over the day to day running of the City, which is the job of the administration. They can't hire or fire people. While many see them as ward mayors, they have no administrative powers. This does not mean they don't advocate hard for their constituency, but I just wanted to make sure people know a lot of this is not within their power and it should not be. It is the administration that ties all of these issues together to make sure every area of the City gets attention.

While I realize there is a lot of frustration, let me remind you that there are over 400 requests with a limited budget. Every single one of those requesting they need attention. We are going to tackle these issues, but it might take longer than you wish. This is the first year of getting organized and prioritized. I have had to sort through 1,200 requests. But I promise you that a system WILL be put in place so that it never gets like this again.

This is true - it needs to be addressed.

I was just trying to point out that many of our traffic issues are due to the overwhelming amount of cars that flow into the city every day by people coming to work here.

They must be people familiar with the area, because they are very bold. I think you are correct in wondering about this because the City needs to put the needs of the residents first, before those drivers using Jersey City as a cut through to somewhere else.

Yea this app needs a update badly but yea crossing there is very hazardous also there’s a hotel right there that has tourists in and out and I’ve seen them waiting a while to cross

Typically of bureaucrats, Engineering- Althea is blaming the public and making excuses, incl. budgetary ones. Safety, incl. pedestrian safety, should be among our top couple of priorities, for all of Fulop's chuntering on re: reductions in violent crime. Perhaps Jersey City has the funding to pay damages when someone finally gets hurt or even killed? Jersey City is far more pedestrian than most other municipalities in NJ, so, if drivers from elsewhere are not respecting our laws and safety, measures need to be implemented. There's always at least one copper during daytime hours by all the major construction sites, so why not this crossing?
As for Boggiano and all his claims re: "independent leadership, " he can and should bw doing more -- certainly more than appointing his crooked cronies to posts financed with city funding.

You are clearly requesting enforcement of the laws. Yes the Mayor, the administration, and Public Safety.

If people want to break the law, they will find a way. We are not enforcement at Infrastructure. We are working on traffic calming.

Not sure where i blamed anyone except saying that it is up to the Mayor and his administration. Then I was pointing out that there are a lot of requests, more than can be handled in a single year. I don't want to lie and I am not going to pass the buck. My job is to make sure I collect all of the issues and requests into a summary and hand it over to the engineers and planners, while making sure it never falls off of the radar.

BUT I am not going to say "we will get you X, Y, and Z" and then go radio silent.

The flagging came from someone reading this, not from anyone working for the City. They probably blocked it for being a rant unrelated to the issue. They aren't wrong. This is not a forum.

So if you want to rant about how unsafe this intersection is and what you have experienced and what you believe will fix the problem, beyond enforcement (which you need to report to Public Safety, then please do.

Meanwhile, as a community member, i will also be fighting to keep the JCRA from closing down the pedestrian pathway to the Square for 2 years, which will keep anyone from even bothering to cross the street here!

Police officers at construction sites are off duty-paid officers, that must be hired if there is an alteration of traffic. I am not sure most of us could handle the amount our taxes will go up if we paid officers overtime for the 400 intersections. most of us are already crushed under the 30% increase from the school board.

Just letting you know that the facts are a little more complex than you might have assumed.

1. A comment I posted earlier today was blocked until I made a complaint re: this. I was adding to the discussion, not "ranting";
2. Idk whether officers directing traffic near construction sites are on- or off-duty; they're in uniform, in any case;
3. If ££ is the problem, make these developers pay their fair share, as they should be doing anyway;
4. Forgot to add earlier that ppl drive v unsafely in various areas, such as making U turns in the middle of the road instead of going around the block, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do so at this intersection.

Correct, everything you bring up is an enforcement issue and as you pointed out, it is a City wide issue, not just this crossing. No one from the City blocked your message, it was someone or some persons from your community. Gad you were able to get them unblocked so I could see them.

Developers - That would be City Planning. They are not on SCF. You would need to attend the Planning Board meetings or if you cannot attend, you can write to them requesting your comments become a part of the record.

Magnolia is kind of hidden, and I'd suggest there are better places to cross. Firstly, there is nothing on the west side of Tonnele except houses. So why not cross at Pavonia, which is much wider and has a pedestrian flasher, or at JFK where there is a traffic signal?
And, I'm not of the opinion that traffic going southbound on Tonnele is people from out of town coming to work. I'm of the mind it's from the many buildings west of JFK that have been built with encouragement from the city, but never considered in allowing for better traffic management, signage etc. They keep jamming us in here, but don't want to acknowledge we exist. Tonnele is the best way to get from West of JFK to the east side of Journal Square.
There was a traffic audit done of the St. Paul's / Tonnele Ave. area more than four years ago, and none of the recommendations in the report were ever implemented. Instead, the city is wasting a lot of time, effort and money improving a 3-block stretch of St. Paul's Ave., while neglecting the rest of the neighborhood.

Not happening because I’m not the only one who crosses there the Ramada Hotel is right there and the drivers are NOT observing the crosswalk…. Tons of people cross there

And Althea — just wanted to respond to something you said further up: while the councilman has limited powers and isn’t the mayor, Boggiano has actively thwarted pedestrian safety efforts. He’s an active impediment. His priority has been cars and parking. He will help residents convert illegal driveways into legal ones which takes away from parking from everyone else. He has actively tried to limited community participation in a recent walking audit in the ward. He is anti bike lanes which only further promotes conventions because people don’t feel safe taking an alternate mode of transportation. So while his powers are limited let’s also call a spade a spade.
