Today a city crew is out there (with permit) to repair the street for new water lines at 116 Faircloth St. The building construction has been ongoing for weeks, using the bike lane for parking and equipment. We'd hoped that they would lay some gravel for parking on the building lots, but that doesn't seem to be the plan.
Northbound Faircloth Street in this stretch is especially dangerous - drivers see a straight shot to Wade Avenue a half-mile away and immediately start checking their phones (seriously?). Trying to merge from a bike lane into a traffic lane is a challenge on most streets because car drivers expect cyclists to "stay in their lane". Faircloth is even more dangerous. The bike lane should be posted as no parking.
I don't think it's too much to ask contractors to park on Clark or Ruffin and walk past two-three houses to prevent accidents. If the intent of bike lanes is to make travel safer for bicyclists, it's wasted when people continuously block them.

I'm not sure the contact had the desired effect. Today there are trucks with trailers in the northbound lane (one trailer is an enclosed tool trailer, the other holds a small digger) - and they now have the opposite bike lane blocked as well with an unhitched trailer and a separate parked car.
Having both bike lanes blocked on a nice day makes it possible to have 2 bikes and 2 cars trying share the remaining space between with a deadly asymmetry of kinetic energy. I can only hope everyone is situationally aware.
Sadly, I think we need to reopen this one.
