  City of Oakland please do something about this lot full of stolen/ broken down vehicles and homeless encampment. I cannot believe how this encampment is growing and nothing has been done especially when is right next to the high school yard! It is unbelievable how this can be allowed . Where is the protection for students?

  Please look into this issue. We walked from Bart to Latitude HS yesterday and had to walk over a dog and broken glass and debris to go down the sidewalk. It is not safe for kids.

  Please act quickly to deal with this safety issue as the school semester starts on August 14th. This homeless encampment is directly on the route from Fruitvale BART station to Latitude High School and is a safety concern for students who rely on BART for transportation to school. This is a liability issue for the City of Oakland and must be addressed immediately.

  Please prioritize this issue and work with the property owner who I imagine also is not super thrilled to have this situation. From what I understand-the policy is prioritizing areas by schools and in parks. This affects children's safety and violates the requirement for safe routes to schools.

  This adjacent lot should be donated to Latitude High School for a soccer field for those kids who play on the concrete. Soccer Balls are constantly being kicked over and it’s definitely not safe for kids to retrieve them. Please provide something rewarding to Oakland students. Such a shame and safety hazard to have that lot filled with stolen/broken down vehicles instead of being able to use it for the kids as a soccer field. Latitude students have to travel to other schools to practice soccer! This can actually be a solution.

  Great idea, Liz! This area needs to be cleaned up and used for good. I too have had to step over the dog to get to the school.

  I'm not heartless to the needs of the homeless and would support a structured and monitored space for RV parking, etc, but this encampment location is unsafe for the kids who are walking through it to access school.

  This lot is next to Latitude High and the city hasn't done anything to address the issues that arise in this area. It is unsafe for our students who have to walk through to get to school. Would love to see something done about this to keep it cleaner and safer. It also could be an awesome donation to our school to expand into a soccer field.

  Our Oakland students are legally entitled to a free public education. The fires at this encampment are infringing on their rights by causing the school to be closed. They are also a safety hazard to our staff and teachers. These encampments need to be shut down immediately.

  My child attends Latitude high school which is directly behind this encampment. There has already been several fires in the area recently and this is another one waiting to happen. Please think about our students safety! We ask for you to PLEASE HELP with clearing this encampment out and prevent a tragedy from happening. Students are directly impacted by playing on the other side this property or walking to or from school. Keep our students safe!!!!!!

  Our students at Latitude deserve better than this! It is outrageous that ongoing issues on this property are infringing on our student’s access to a free an public education in a safe place. It is also outrageous that resources from the school have been used to try to keep our children safe for this specific property. Would this be allowed to continue next to schools in Montclair or more affluent neighborhoods? The Fruitvale community deserves better and so do the students attending Latitude. This is completely inequitable.

  This issue was originally reported and acknowledged for code enforcement in July...now it's October and kids had to be sent home from public school next door due to fire smoke. This is horrific that situation is allowed to continue.

  My understanding is this is privately owned property where the owner has abdicated responsibility. This alone should provide an avenue to pursue a helpful resolution to these kids and this school. Charge the owner or confiscate the property and CLEAN IT OUT.

  This isn't a 'live and let live' situation...this is a dumping ground for stolen property where things are set on fire. No neighborhood should be expected to live with this. Take action NOW.

  Please get involved in the situation happening here. There are fires set, pollution issues and safety concerns not to mention the dumping and garbage piled all over the lot. This abuts against a High School out door space and the schools fence has had fire damage. The owners of the lot have not taken action. Our students should be safe when they attends high school. Please show that our students matter and do what’s necessary to end this mess.
  Do the right thing and please prioritize this.
  I am sure that your department is overstretched but this is at a school!

  Yes please help! There are barrels of gasoline on this property which poses a huge danger to the school. There has already been several fires that burned through the campus fence. Drugs has also been thrown over the fence onto the campus where our kids play during recess and PE. This is incredibly unsafe for our children!

  This is a problem that really needs to be addressed. Manny and his girlfriend were moved out by the owner and the property was cleaned – but since then they have moved back and recruited a number of other homeless people to occupy the property. Basically the cleanup allowed them to pack the entire property and it appears nothing is being done to prevent this.

  You can see what this looks like from the upstairs window of our brick building. I have been very accommodating of the homeless situation on E.12th as we have been rebuilding these buildings. But now it is making the area undesirable and unsafe.

  Manny and his “guests” are illegally taking electricity from the light poles and taking water from EBMUD.

  And a few weeks ago I was assaulted by Manny who is the mayor of this encampment when I moved a stolen vehicle that had been dropped in front of my gate further down E. 12th. He accused me of trying to make his encampment look bad – I was just trying to have access to my property. I called the police and reported this assault but they told me they can’t do anything really as it is private property and at most this is a misdemeanor offence. I did not fight him – or provoke him – it was really outrageous behavior he exhibited. He gets pretty crazed.

  Is there anything to be done to evict them? Can the city enforce the many ordinances that prohibit this squatting and occupancy? Cut off the electricity and water? Can you get the Sherrif to move them out and keep them out?

  We have spent a lot of time and money rebuilding our buildings, got permits from the city and followed the rules. We pay a lot of taxes. But now we are having a hard time renting the property as potential tenants are worried about this homeless encampment. I can say now after being assaulted that I agree.

  And what about the school? What do the teachers and kids think of having a homeless encampment with potentially dangerous occupants right over the fence?

  Can we get an update on this from the City? Can anything be done to evict them from that lot? As a Parent of a Latitude High student I am always worried about when the next fire is going to start. Today a van was set on fire by the train tracks close to the latitude parking lot. Our students had to be sent home because of the smoke going into the highschool. This is ridiculous!
