I'm informed that speed signs do not make a difference, because all drivers know that neighborhood streets run at 25 miles per hour. Summit street is used as a major conduit for much of the day and takes the load off Miller for East West traffic. There have been many accidents over the last decade on Summit. All of the people I asked for an opinion who live on Summit with one exception, feel the traffic speeding on summit is a big problem. To contradict the belief that speed signs for 25MPH are not necessary I offer the fact that there is such a sign on DEVONSHIRE east of Arlington, where traffic is minimal. Devonshire, both before and after Arlington, has speed bumps too. I have seen the 25 mph sign in many places. We would a couple signs installed on Summit that inform drivers of the legal speed.

IN fact there isn't just one sign on Devonshire. There are at least five 25 MPH signs in the course of the space between extreme east Devonshire where it curves sharply, and Londonderry or Avon intersection. Some of these 25 mph signs are PERCHED OVER SPEED BUMPS. There may be three or four speed bumps. Evidently these people care about traffic and their children. They must have demanded action. They certainly got it. This makes any reluctance to use even one sign on Summit Street look bad.

Supposedly the city does not put up 25 MPH signs. The reason given - every driver already knows its a 25 mile per hour zone if there is no sign. Remember though, you'd have to traverse the whole street looking for one before you knew it WAS NOT a 35 mph street. At any rate, there is a double standard. This sign is one of those 'not needed' and very expensive signs.

You must have missed a session in drivers education. A yellow sign is advisory, meaning you might want to obey. A white sign is regulatory, meaning you shall obey. The yellow sign hold no legal penalty.

Nice quibble. But there are also white 25 mph signs on this stretch of Devonshire, though one of them is currently broken off by a driver hit and lies frozen to the ground. Fankly I'd be happy to see some yellow signs of advice on Summit. The point is, cars are speeding on Summit and there are no yellow or white signs to indicate the speed. We turned in a page of signatures (a form to request action) to the city months ago and have heard nothing about it. I don't think this has much to do with drivers ed.

The City does not generally install speed signs on prima facie 25 mph streets in neighborhoods or the downtown.

What a horrible response by Ann Arbor Admin. There certainly are 25 MPH speed limit signs on prima facie 25 mph streets in Ann Arbor, as reported in this very thread. Both entrances to my neighborhood have them as well. The OP gave good reasons why there should be considered for Summit, not just dismissed with a "we don't generally do this".

It should amaze anyone that Ann Arbor Admin would think this response is acceptable. But sadly, we often get garbage answers like this.

Thank you for contacting the City of Ann Arbor regarding your concerns for transportation safety. The City does not generally install speed signs on prima facie 25 mph streets in neighborhoods or the downtown. The speed limit is established by code, part of driver's education training, and cover in "What Every Driver Must Know" published by the Secretary of State. THe City received a qualifying pedition for traffic calming on this section of Summit; however, the street did not meet the speed requirement. Results of the traffic calming process can be found at www.a2gov.org/traffic calming.
