Thank you for reporting this issue. What time do you see this issue occurring? There has been alot of enforcement recently for motor vehicle violations at that particular intersection by the Traffic Unit due to citizens' complaints. We obviously can not stay there all day and have to move around the City but I will let them now if you give me a time. Normally, when we are out there, motorists avoid doing certain things in front of us.
As for the officer, he/she is not allowed to leave the exit ramp to address violations at the light under most circumstances. They are there to prevent accidents occurring from motorists leaving the garage.
Please let me know the time frame.

I see cars going through red lights during rush hours (8-9 a.m. and 3-6 pm). Cars have driven through the red light right in front of me as I was trying to cross at the walk light.

Would it be possible to install a traffic signal on the exit ramp so that it is green when the intersection is red (and vice versa)? THat would only be necessary during shift changes when people are leaving the garage. Then the officer (or cameras) could enforce compliance at both spots...

It seems like the police officer directing traffic makes the problem worse for pedestrians by stopping traffic that has a green light, causing the backup into the York St. intersection.

Maybe the officer could instead direct the traffic from the intersection at York St instead of at the bottom of the ramp> This would still allow drivers to exit the garage safely, while also preventing drivers from blocking the intersection for pedestrians? Or maybe two officers could work in tandem to stop the traffic at York St. and direct traffic at the bottom of the ramp?

I would agree with Jacki Fitzpatrick's comments that the worst times for blocking the box are at rush hours (7:30-9:00 am and 4:00-6:00 pm). I have not noted much blocking of the box during the midday hours. Will this situation be improved or worsened when the Exit 2 ramp closes?

I can't count how many times an Officer was stationed at this corner only to stand frozen even in summer as cars,trucks and buses completely block the intersection.No tickets,nada peep , pedestrians try to ask the cop to do something , only to get a reply like "Whose the Steward"?

I agree with previous commentators that this is mainly a problem during rush hour periods. Is there any possibility of automated enforcement that would not tie down limited police resources?

Unfortunately the Red Light Camera bill has died either in committee or on the floor of the legislature for the past 5 years so right now, automated enforcement is not possible.

It is not only cars blocking the intersection when the pedestrian light is on that is of concern, but there are cars running the red light here both in morning rush hour and evening rush hour in hours stated above, 7:30 - 9:00 a.m., 4:00 -6:00 p.m. Dangerous.

This has been a problem for many years and is only worse now with the construction and closure of the entrance ramp. This is a very hazardous situation, and it is surprising that there are not more serious accidents. There needs to be more consistent and intense police action at this intersection and the one at College Street. I think that the city is extremely negligent in not addressing this problem in a serious manner.

@Police District Manager for Hill North - that you for your response on SCF - however, I have yet to see any enforcement of this issue. Today I was again nearly hit by a car that was blocking the intersecting during the pedestrian walk phase. When will there be a police officer at this location? Thank you

The Traffic Unit has issued over 90 tickets in this area in the past 3 months, which will be ongoing. Unfortunately, we can't enforce blocking the box yet until there is signage and markings in the road, per the State Statute.

The City, Economic Development and the Police Department all recognize the problem and are actively working on it. There was a recent traffic study there highlighting the motor vehicle violations, as well as the many digitally distracted pedestrians crossing the street. Traffic and Parking is in the process of getting the work done but I don't have a time frame.

The construction in the area has also significantly impacted the whole stretch of road, making this stretch of road even worse.

I will again share your concerns with the above mentioned, especially the Traffic Unit for continued enforcement.

90 tickets over three months works out to one ticket a day....

New Haven PD may not legally be able to enforce blocking the box, but they should be able to give more warnings and tickets to those running red lights.

So, what is the holdup on the signage and markings for the intersection in order to be able to ticket cars that run the light and that block the intersection?

NHPD can enforce the Blocking of the Box , it's called Obstruction of traffic , failure to grant the right of way..And usually a Running the Red Light can go with that ticket..Not hard to approach a vehicle Blocking the Box , asking the motorist to roll down their window ,sheesh plenty of time to ask for license and registration..
A tcket a day ? Yeah keeps the vehicles away -From Dunkin Donuts and Krauzer's ,how dare you take the officers parking spot?
AND , I see plenty of signage , and even white painted pedestrian stripes on the street

We see this morning that white stripes have been painted over the weekend at the intersection of Frontage Road South and York Street. Would you advise what else is planned and what we can expect. I assume this is for "Blocking of the Box" enforcement? Please advise.

Please advise if there is also plans for the intersection of South Frontage Road and York Street for enforcement of cars running the red light when the pedestrian light is on. Cars are still running the red lights (not related to blocking of the box) and pedestrians are at still RISK.
