MDOT SHA owns and maintains all non-toll, numbered roads in Maryland's 23 counties such as I-495 (the Capital Beltway), MD 355 (Rockville Pike) and US 40 (Baltimore National Pike). This issue is not under County jurisdiction and must be addressed by the State Highway Administration (SHA). This ticket will be closed in SeeClickFix.

Thank you for submitting your request to the Howard County Department of Public Works. Our staff will investigate this issue and respond.

The area that is in concern, is a area that is sprayed with herbicide every year. Went to site and seen nothing causing trouble to drivers on roadway.

It blocks the shoulder where cyclists ride forcing them to ride closer to drivers who typically go above the speed limit on this road.

At this time this section of road does not have a designated bike lane. Yes I agree that this road has a lot of traffic on it and they are probably doing over the speed limit. That would be the Howard County Police issue.

Bike lane or not, it should be unacceptable to have a portion of the road blocked by vegetation.

I will have Traffic engineering take a look at this request.

State law permits cyclists to be on the road regardless of the presence of a bike lane. Typically cyclists rely on the shoulder to stay out of the travel lane and not impede traffic where possible. Vegetation or other obstructions such as this make it difficult to maintain this 'minimal' separation leading to a public safety issue. As an Engineer myself it is my obligation to ensure public safety so I am sure that the Traffic Engineer will also abide by this obligation.

Please trim the vegetation back and provide additional room for cyclists. This section is narrow and cars pass un-safely all the time.

I have reported the exact same type of shoulder vegetation/maintenance/safety issue on state roads via their SHA customer service website, and they fix it within about 1 week or less.

Hopefully next week, we will trim back area along the whole guardrail area heading south bound from County line. With rain that could be left from Delta, it depends if it rains in the beginning of the week.
