Please put sharrows or bike lanes the entire length of Upper State Street.
There are way too many cyclists riding on the sidewalk here.
I told one cyclist today that police were giving out tickets and he said as he pulled into the road with me, "I didn;t know. There's no bike lanes or signs that tell me to be in the road."
The streets smarts campaign is a start but it falls short of reminding riders and drivers where they should ride when they are actually riding.

I was bicycling home from the grocery store a couple weeks ago down Upper State Street between Edwards and Orange. This guy driving a huge delivery truck got frustrated because there wasn't space to safely pass me. He leaned out of his window and yelled "HEY!! YOU GOTTA GET OUT OF MY WAY!!" I gladly would have, except we were all waiting at the Humphrey Street traffic light anyway and me pulling over would have just allowed him to wait in line five feet farther forward. The guys in the car ahead of me turned around, gave me the thumbs up, and shouted "Go bicycles!" The light turned green. I went straight. The guy driving the truck turned right onto Humphrey.
Ben Berkowitz, David Streever, and I measured the width of Upper State Street at several points using a 25-ft measuring tape on October 4th of last year. We determined that the street varies from 39 feet in width to 44 feet, if my memory serves me correctly.

Brian or David,
Has there been any progress on this with ECC and the City?

Thanks For Acknowledging T&P.
Is there any update on this? I'll stop asking for stuff for at least a week :-)
Happy Holidays.

Is there money in the budget to install these on State Street this summer?
I know that sharrows have been promised this year for the Humphrey - Fair Haven route...

Any progress on this? ECC can add State Street to its 2011 bicycle plan, but in the meantime maybe the Upper State neighborhood association should submit a formal request for changes through the city's new Complete Streets policy. There is a form within the manual that neighbors can use. These requests are being closely monitored, and indicate neighborhood demand for changes like these.
Interestingly, after a buffered bike lane was installed in New York on Prospect Park, incidents of sidewalk riding dropped from 50% to 4%. I agree that safe biking infrastructure is essential to making State Street more prosperous - if it was more controlled I would ride over there much more often.
Sharrows and other signs are a nice start, but even if sharrows were put in, the high speeds would not make it accessible to cyclists of all ages and abilities.
