THE REVISED ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Sec. 14-13. - Playing in streets.
No person shall, within the limits of any street, play any game of ball or football, throw any snowball, stone or any hard substance, fly any kite or engage in any other amusement, game or exercise, interfering with the safe and convenient use of such street by any person traveling or passing along the same."
Ridiculous, there are real issues that need to be addressed in the city and kids playing basketball in these streets is causing no harm to anyone. There is an ordinance for just about everything, but discretion and common sense should prevail in their enforcement. It is too bad such a useful tool can get so bogged down needlessly.
While the safety of the children of Brockton may not be a "real issue" for you; ask any pediatrician, ER physician or police officer about the risk of pedestrians being hit by cars especially children playing in the street. Pedestrians in Brockton are at twice the risk than the rest of MA: https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/124/2/802
Enough.. close this already! This is mind numbing and utterly ridiculous. We are still referring to the ‘issue’? with basketball hoops on Stephen drive and not Quincy Street, Belmont Street or across the city or state correct? Or should we now expect to see more of these ridiculous posts for every location you find that there is a basketball hoop? Do you have any vested interest in these hoops? Do you even live on Stephen drive or have any children that would use them? Why don’t you just let the parents of those using those basketball hoops on Stephen drive worry about their own children and you worry about yours. The children and mostly young adults that are actually using these basketball hoops on are very conscious and considerate of traffic and are not ever in the way, so there is not an issue there at all. Why make it one? There has NEVER been a single issue with these in the years they have been there. You keep harping on this needlessly as someone that has way too much time on their hands and should put that time to better use on real issues. We have enough “busy bodies” around already and there are really many many more important issues in the area that need attention, so move on to the real issues. Check your facts; there is a much higher probability of getting in trouble doing other things than playing basketball. As with city ordinances and laws on the books there are statistics out there to show whatever anyone wants (and yours are no different and surely don’t have anything to do with basketball on Stephen drive).. What is next? Kids also ride their bikes on the streets..Just as I did growing up and I’m sure you did as well..Surely you aren't going to be posting an issue every time someone rides their bike or walks down the street as well?? The issue was raised relating to Stephen drive ONLY and not playing basket ball on Quincy Street, Belmont Street or any other ‘busy’ street throughout the city or state for that matter..
