We don't have a crosswalk at the bridge, where Riverside meets Colchester Avenue, but we do at Barrett Street, both at Riverside and at Colchester. Would like to double check and be clear on the location before commenting.

Looked at this again today and see we are talking about the existing, newly installed pedestrian signals. The timing is derived from the walking distance or width of the street. It meets the newer, more conservative (more time required) standards of the 2009 MUTCD. It does not take you all the way across before the lights go green for cars. Rather, it gives pedestrians first shot at the crosswalk for 7 seconds, then releases parallel traffic. Most people will make it more than half way across in this interval. Once pedestrians establish their legal presence in the crosswalk, turning drivers yield, and then may continue. The flashing don't walk and yellow intervals allow people to finish their crossing. The times are correct and appear to be more than adequate for many crossings observed. They are shorter than some, but again this is based on the relatively narrow street widths. The times are meant for crossing Riverside, or Colchester, one at a time, but not both within the same walk interval. They are too far apart. What the new signals provide, that wasn't there before, is a brief pause in the sometimes almost continuous traffic that makes crossing difficult. The Department of Public Works has resolved this request. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work.
