Imo OVER salting is happening on many streets. Chloride build-up is harmful to soil, plants, animals etc. It is also intensifying the corrosion rates of underground gas and water piping. As an example, much of the lead leaching problem in the Flint. Michigan debacle was due to excessive road salt leeching lead from pipes and into water mains. Think before you salt. Use of sand can be a more environmentally sound solution for slippery conditions.
Unlike the "hired" plow contractors in my area, I do believe that DPW itself does try to find a sound balance with use of salt on the roads. Thanks DPW!!!
