Brian you think the new lights are dimmer?? I beg to differ. My backyard is bright as day. And I’m not particularly worried about “prowlers” and being mugged in my own yard. Breaking happen more in the daytime when everyone is at work. The lights are blinding, and my backyard living space (surrounded by a 6 foot. Privacy fence) is absolutely ruined.

The old street lights where 150 watts. The new ones are either LED 70 watt or 40 watt., just look up during the day and the number will tell you the wattage of your light. You where just use to the old yellow sodium vapor and not the new bright white.. The new lights shine straight down like a spot light, not out like tthe old ones that where the flood type

FYI....We want the yard lit up like before. The wife and daughter do not care to invite peepers and prowlers snooping around in the shadows of a dark yard.

Um, no. The lights before did NOT flood my yard with blinding light. These do. The LEDs behind my house do not shine straight down - they flood my yard. The poles are tall and the light pollution to surrounding yards is extreme. Not sure what kind of neighborhood you live in, but prowlers and peepers aren't a problem for us. The few break inswe know of in our neighborhood over the last several years have occurred in broad daylight. We love our city and our neighborhood. We loved it a lot more when we could enjoy our private backyard.

The alley is on the left of the picture. Does that look like the streetlights are pointing straight down like a spotlight in the alley??

Duke energy contacted me and stated that they could do nothing about the light because it is owned by the city of St. Petersburg. The city must contact duke and provide permission for duke to contact me directly regarding the light pollution problem.

This photo is inside my privacy fenced backyard - late at night. With no flash!! My organic garden is now blasted with light 24 hours a day. The yards on the south side of the alley are pitch black. My yard and the yard neighboring me to the east are the only yards affected, it’s like having security flood lights on all night long. These lights aren’t illuminating the alley, just our two yards. The alley is pitch black beyond the width of our two adjacent yards.

I have not received an update from the city of St. Petersburg, or from Duke energy on this. When will this issue be addressed?

Duke Energy is still in the process of converting street lights to higher efficiency LED technology. The street lights included in this conversion are owned and maintained by Duke Energy within the City limits. The conversion program started in June 2018 and should be completed by June 2020. Until this project is finished, Duke has said that they will not be installing any shielding - that process will happen at a later time. We will once again forward your request to Duke on your behalf.

You expect me to deal with this light pollution for TWO YEARS??? That is not acceptable. Duke indicated they would be happy to send a technician out to re-aim and shield the light, they simply need St Pete's permission for them to do so since the light is owned by the city and not by me. I will call every office at City Hall if I have to, but I'm not dealing with this light pollution until June 2020.

Re-open acknowledged, Duke Energy will be notified of this request again.

We are also in a similar situation where the street light in the middle of the alley is shining directly in our backyard. Our entire triple lot is covered by intense light, all the way from the alley to and including the back of the house. It is so bright that it shines through the bedroom draperies. This is a total invasion of privacy and limits of the use of our own yard. Please supply shields or make adjustments to the intensity of the light.
