Description

I've lived on Hanover Ave. in Oakland for nearly 11 years. I drive up Hanover to turn left on Newton every morning. People speed in both directions on Newton. There are stop signs for Hanover drivers. Newton and Hanover meet at the top of a hill so visibility is already awful. What adds to it is when people park in the red zones on the corners which eliminates visibility *significantly*.

A few months ago, after looking both ways multiple times, I proceeded to turn left on Newton and nearly got smashed by a speeding SUV approaching me on my left side. He screeched to a stop. I braced for impact. We were only inches apart when our cars were stopped. I was terrified. There have been countless other times where there were near misses with others. Parents often cross with children walking to school and there are no crosswalks. It is an INCREDIBLY dangerous intersection that I strongly encourage becoming a 4-way stop. There's a four way stop at both ends of Newton, but not at the top so people have lots of time to pick up speed.
If adding two stop signs on Newton will take forever to put in place, PLEASE have someone ticket the cars at the corner in the red zone every day. There are people parked there most mornings. The city could make enough to pay for crosswalk paint and two new signs in a short time, I'm sure.
