Anyone criticizing bicyclists is bound to get their gander up. I do need to get to work on time and I shouldn't have to leave home earlier than I do because of inconsiderate bicyclists who think THEY own the road.

If you need to get work on time than it is your responsibility for time management. If going slower than the posted 25 MPH speed limit for 8 to 10 blocks is going to make you late for work, you need to come up with a better plan to get to work on time.

I occasionally ride with those Saturday morning groups, most of which originate out of the North Shore Drive municipal swimming pool parking lot (at 10th Ave) starting at 8:30AM, every Saturday morning. Literally hundreds of cyclists show up and, rather than everyone leaving at once, we ride out in “waves” of 20 to 25 cyclists per group, as a specific courtesy to automobile drivers, so that folks like you don’t have to deal with 50 or 100 cyclists all at once. And, we alternate, with half the groups looping though south St. Pete, while every other group head north. Again, this is to spread the pain, or inconvenience, if you will, of drivers like you who are greatly put out to find that, heavens! ...other people are using “your” (public) road, Resulting in your being “stuck” behind a group of cyclists. And I note the irony of a (usually) *single* person, comfortably seated in a car, and taking up the *whole lane*, complaining about *25* other people as a group using the same road. Do you feel the same entitlement that says all other *drivers* should stay off “your” road so that YOU can get to your destination, unimpeded, with zero inconvenience??

Florida law REQUIRES that drivers maintain a MINIMUM of 3 feet clearance when passing bicycles. If drivers follow this 3 foot clearance requirement then they often have to pull into the opposite lane in order to pass cyclists. Now imagine that your annoying group of 20 - 25 riders were instead all in a single file, on North Shore Drive, along Coffee Pot, let’s say. Then a driver like you comes up from behind, and in your privileged impatience you start to pass the long line of single file cyclists. But you have to pull into the opposite lane to maintain the 3 foot clearance. Then a car comes from the other direction and you’re only halfway past the long line of 25 riders. Now you are forced to pull back into your lane, which is relatively narrow up by Coffee Pot, and now you are NOT at least 3 feet away from the cyclists; in fact you are now squeezing the cyclists toward the granite curb as you try not to get hit by the on-coming car. The cyclists start to wobble in the narrow space remaining between your too-close passenger door and the curb; the cyclists are all hoping like hell that no one goes down, which instantly causes all the following cyclists into a very difficult and dangerous position.

I do believe, that if TG and his/her friends were ticketed and fought it in court, that the situation s/he describes above certainly falls into this category.

Sorry, the law states single file , bicyclists . And a pack of 20 or so bicycles are still too many. Cars can't pass that many. 4 or 5....maybe. Law enforcement take note of bicycle campaign Ride Right/Drive Right because there's no reasoning with bicyclists. They all believe THEY are the privileged ones and yes TG you are annoying. No doubt "Share-The-Road" applies to both motorists and cyclists. Motorists don't own the roads any more than cyclists do. Seriously count how long it actually takes to wait for safe passage around cyclists; I'm sure it is less than a minute at the most - that can be made up easily with a flick of the ankle on the gas pedal as soon as it is safe to pass. I am at the dog park when the cycle group goes south on North Shore Drive and fail to stop at the stop sign on 7th Ave going towards Beach Drive(right turn at the stop sign) ...most times making the cars traveling west who have the RIGHT of way stop because the cyclists fail to properly stop at their stop sign...will take a video next Saturday and Sunday all morning long. Yes, bicycles have the same rights as cars,BUT start by obeying all the rules of the road, not just those you selectively want enforced. Thanks

Update from Transportation Management: When there is a marked bike lane, the law directs bicyclists to use it. However, it is important to note that the applicable Florida Statute (316.2065) has many exceptions for when bicyclists may be legally riding outside the bike lane. The two segments of roadway mentioned here have bike lanes on only one side, which means motorists should expect bicyclists riding in the regular travel lanes when proceeding in the direction without bike lanes. The bike lanes that are out there are within the “door zone” of parked cars, so motorists should expect to see a bicyclist leave the bike lane when passing parked cars, which they are doing legally and for their own safety. Also, that same statute specifically allows bicyclists to ride two-abreast within a single lane.

For Beach Drive to the south of 7th Ave N, there are no bike lanes at all. To encourage bicyclists to avoid the busy sidewalks, there are supplemental roadway markings called Shared Lane Markings, signs indicating that “Bikes May Use Full Lane,” and a low posted speed of 20 mph to discourage speeding in the pedestrian-first environment.

Overall, bicycles are considered vehicles under Florida law and a person riding a bicycle has the same right to use the roadway as a person driving a motor vehicle. The City specifically encourages and welcomes bicyclists on our streets for the health of our citizens, for keeping parking spaces open for those that need to drive, and for the economic boost they provide to local businesses. Lastly, Saturday and Sunday mornings are not commute hours and a little patience goes a long way.

DTSP resident and runner since 1999. MOST cyclist do not recognize a stop sign, red light nor pedestrian crosswalk. They switch from sidewalk to road based on convenience. They use the road when there are designated bike lanes (watch the cameras around Bayshore Dr/Dali/Hilton). Their lack of consideration isn't the real issue. St Pete did a horrific job designing bike routes through our city. Even though they received an incentive for CITY TRAILS...they didn't construct the width of bike lanes through Old Northeast/Snell Isle/Shore Acres in accordance with required specifications. Complained many times but they ignore it just like all the sewer/sewage problems.

Under the law bicyclists can use the entire lane, meaning they can ride in the middle of the lane, when it is not wide enough to accommodate a car and bicycle and there is no bike lane. FDOT has determined that width to be 14 feet. As there are few lanes that wide in the city, you should expect cyclists in the middle of the lane. Best safety practices suggest that the middle of the lane is also the safest position as that is where cars coming from side streets look for vehicles, not along the right hand side of the lane. Also it dissuades motorists from making a poor decision to try to share a lane that is too narrow.

. Sounds like whoever you are in transportation management might be one of those bike riders yourself.. Why don't you look into the campaign Ride-Right / Drive Right at flbike.org and try to fix the situation. These bike gangs not only take up the entire Road they don't stop at stop signs. Isn't that against the law? Bicyclists are not policing themselves.
