The street was treated with a slurry seal treatment. Slurry seals are applied in order to help preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure and provide a new driving surface. Slurry seal applications serve to seal the cracks, restore lost flexibility to the pavement surface, provide a deep, rich black pavement surface color, and help preserve the underlying pavement structure.

Slurry seal is typically applied on either an intermittent or cyclical basis. Location, weather, traffic loading, and pavement conditions are factors used to determine if a slurry seal application is appropriate. Roadways selected for slurry seal treatment are commonly those which have slight to moderate distress, no rutting, and generally narrow crack widths, and where a slurry seal treatment would help extend the pavement life until resurfacing becomes necessary.

While this road was not re-paved, this treatment will help extend some usable life out of the pavement before we need to expend large amounts of money to fully re-pave the street. By utilizing a combination of pothole repairs, crack sealing, slurry seals, and new overlays, the City can stretch the tax payers dollar as far as possible to do more streets in the City. On the 2018 project, the City stretched the dollar to be able to slurry seal/overlay 33% of the City. Our pavement management program has proven to be successful as we maintain one of the highest overall Pavement Condition Index's in the Bay Area.
