I was sad to see that so many separately reported potholes were "merged" into this fairly bland report. Thornhill Drive between Moraga and Pinehaven is an absolute mess and there are at least two very large potholes that are definitely doing damage to my tires and suspension (especially when they are filled with water and invisible, like they were yesterday), The location of the potholes is causing me and others to swerve to avoid them and this is a danger in and of itself.
These Thornhill potholes are incredibly dangerous. The swerving I'm having to do to avoid them cannot possibly be safe. For low-profile tires/wheels like in my car, these potholes can do very serious damage. I have already replaced 3 wheels in 2 years from hitting similar sized potholes in Oakland. This is so close to home I have to be extremely careful to avoid them every time I leave the neighborhood. They are deep and severe potholes.
The potholes and general road surface conditions on Thornhill, starting from Moraga and going to the intersection with Pinehaven, are doing damage to tires and wheels. A lot of drivers now routinely swerve to avoid the most damaged parts, which increases the likelihood of accidents. Please get this fixed, this is probably the worst road surface I have personally experienced, and at this stage it's not materially better than an unpaved road.
Please fix the multiple deep potholes and large cracks which are a hazard to cyclists, pedestrians and drivers who have to swerve to avoid them. It’s very unsafe and major liability for the City to not address unsafe conditions on a major public thoroughfare.
So you repaved Moraga..is that because it goes through Piedmont????? I'm sick and tired of hitting those potholes at night WHEN I CAN'T SEE THEM. If my axle or tires get damaged I'm sending the City of Oakland the BILL. FIX Thornhill.
Laura
The city is currently under investigation regarding negligence in relation to not reacting to the Ghost Ship fire. There are 3 pre-schools and two elementary schools along Thornhill and Mountain Blvd. If cars are swerving to avoid potholes and a child is injured or worse, could the city be held accountable due to the numerous reports and complaints of unsafe conditions? Maybe it would be cheaper for the city to fix the street (just a thought!)...and stop just throwing patches that just come off in a few weeks. Thornhill is a major thoroughfare for the hills in case of emergency... Repave it!
We have lived in this neighborhood for 15 years, and Thornhill Blvd has gotten progressively busier but with worse, deeper and more numerous potholes the entire length of the street. To avoid damage to our cars, we are all forced to drive around them, zig-zagging our way and dodging oncoming cars. Considering the concentration of residents in our neighborhood who must use Thornhill to access their homes, and to evacuate in an emergency situation, what does it take for the city of Oakland to see the urgency in re-paving Thornhill??
I am very concerned about the potholes on Thornhill road. I drive up and down this road daily, and there are more and more potholes, I must swerve to avoid them and this is dangerous. Thornhill is a major throughofare. I noticed Moraga drive has recently been paved. We should be next!!! Thanks.
I wish to add my comments about the need to repair the potholes on Pinehaven, both from an auto driver's perspective and especially from a bicyclist's. Some of the potholes can cause serious damage to bicycles coasting down Thornhill or even bodily harm. They are really jarring on a cyclist. I know of a cyclist on Skyline who was killed when a pothole caused him to sail into oncoming traffic. We don't want to wait until something like that happens on Thornhill before we get repairs. The terrible pavement at the stop sign coming down Thornhill at Pinehaven also forces cyclists around it and into oncoming traffic (it does seem to force motorists to actually stop at the sign, which is a good thing - most drivers coming up Thornhill seem to just coast through that intersection). Please make repaving this street a major priority. Thank you.
