A light bulb, plastic lens, and a certain gasket material interact and cause a phenomenon called gassing, which slowly degrades the lens. Our capital plan this year upgrades most of our remaining light bulb signals to LEDs. Along with energy savings and reliability, we gain a sharp looking signal with good color output. This intersection is on this years list.

All signals here have been upgraded to LEDs as part of our capital improvement project. A little earlier than originally planned, this one was easier than some others coming up, and there was no disagreement with the requestor's observations. LED upgrades planned this year: Battery & Pearl, Beltline & Plattsburg, North & Plattsburg, Manhattan & Champlain, Park & Sherman (done), Pearl & Champlain (done), Pearl & Union (done), Pearl & Prospect, Colchester & Mansfield, Colchester & Barrett/Riverside, Winooski & Bank, Main & Union, Shelburne & Home. Main & Pine was scheduled, but that is being replaced by the southern connector project.
