Thank you for your post. This afternoon, I was waiting to make a left turn onto California on the east side of the tracks, and two cars cut infront of me and blocked the train tracks. All because of the two new left turn markings onto Carolan ave. Caltrans has done a horrible job with this and its previous temporary lane markings on this work site.
Caltrans painted 2 left turn lanes from Broadway onto Caroline. Very bad idea. There needs to be a lane going straight across the tracks to the left hand turn lane on California. Witnessed cars stopped not knowing where to go.
There have been no less than three previous access burlingame threads on this. All about the dangerous condition of that double left turn. Altogether this is the most commented on issue on this app. And it was eventually 'fixed' when the folks finally recognized how bad it was. And it was allowed to happen again.
I guess we all just have to be extra careful and look out for each other. Because nobody seems to be looking out for us.
Here are the previous discussions and commitments to fix:
2 Lanes going to Carolan
1 Lane going to Broadway and California = Cutting you off
Cars backing up to Bridge/Rollins Rd
2 completely diff/confusing signage/road marking
Pls fix before an accident happens - this is totally something that has not been thought about
Thank you all for your submissions. This intersection is being updated as a part of the Caltrans interchange project. We have contacted Caltrans and are actively working with them to address the issue. We will provide and update when available.
I'll be impressed if anybody owns up to this. A little humility would go a long way toward restoring trust in the folks who are supposed to be looking out for us.
And I have a suggestion - get some extra eyes on the revised plan, get some people who are familiar with the problems of this particular intersection to review before changing it again.
Caltrans has not removed second L arrow towards Carolan - only FEW cars turn L to Carolan - the 2nd L arrow lane is BADLY needed by a LOT of cars turning L to California - why not remove it?
Update: City Staff has been actively working with Caltrans to address the issue. For the time being, motorists are to follow the pavement marking arrows in each lane and a new temporary sign will be installed to further indicate this to motorists.
The problem is motorists are not following the pavement marking arrows in the lane and someone is going to get hurt. No one thinks they are doing anything wrong. When you honk, they either ignore you or flip you off. I think a police officer should be posted at this intersection until it is somehow fixed. People run the left turn light to go straight all day long. I drive through this intersection almost 10 times a day and each time someone goes straight through the left at Carolyn. It is extremely dangerous especially when the caltrans bus is also doing it and it is so big!
On 09/29/2017 it was stated that we are to follow the markings on the pavement and a temporary sign would be put up to help with this problem at Carolyn and Broadway. Today is 6 days later and there is still no sign to help the idiots that don’t understand what a left turn lane is. I am tired of driving there knowing that I will get cut off and possibly hit if I do not let some fool run a red light to go straight from a left turn only lane. PLEASE take care of this problem sooner rather than later!!
REPOTING from another similar thread: Yep...today I watched FIVE consecutive cars ignore the left turn only pavement marking and proceed straight across the tracks to turn left on California. One proposed solution if Caltrans insists on keeping two left turn lanes onto Carolan...install a few of these stands (photo attached) in a curved manner past the stop line and before the railroad pavement markings. In this way vehicles would be forced to turn left on Carolan. Just my 2 cents to try and resolve this dangerous situation.
Looks like our City Traffic Engineer has indeed worked with Caltrans and has gotten us ... a nice new overhead sign indicating their joint intent to have two lanes turn left onto Carolan.
Thanks for listening & not ignoring your residents.
UPDATE: From a city official today. "Based on our conversation with Caltrans, the dual left turn lanes issue on westbound Broadway at Carolan will be addressed by next week."
Finally on day 42, the 2nd set of left turn arrows onto Carolan have been quietly removed. You can see the pavement scars of where the left turn arrows and lane used to be.
However, the sign over head on the signal still says two left turn lanes. So there’s still confusion as the pavement indications don’t match the signs. So close.
Regarding the overhead sign still showing 2 left turn lanes...from the City: "Let’s see if they fix this themselves; they must have seen it. If it is still like this in a few days I will go back to them."
Thx, Greg, for taking the initiative and contacting the city.
Just heard from another civic-minded local (a Broadway merchant) who contacted Caltrans directly, pointed out the need to make sure the signs match the paint and got Caltrans to commit to change the sign as soon as possible.
Way to go Burlingame citizens taking ownership of a problem and proactively doing something about it!
Thank you very much for fixing this issue. The single turn lane is sufficient for traffic and the "straight" lane to the left on California is great. I am glad that it was all worked out!

MT,
Did Caltrans do this on their own?
Or did they get approval from the City to do it?
Seems like a pretty important point if Caltrans did something on a Burlingame street without permission.

Hi Mr Transportation Engr MT,
Asking again:
Did Caltrans do this on their own?
Or did they get City approval to do it?
Please enlighten those of us who drive thru here everyday & risk our sanity if not our lives just trying to do the right thing.
