The 19 Mile Rd. roundabout may be appropriate, but why the second roundabout Romeo Plank roundabout? This is hardly a busy intersection. Two consecutive roundabouts yards apart is ridiculous.

These round abouts are a nice feature to the area, and I fully understand how to use them, however, if you've used these intersections when the high school lets out at the end of the day, you would understand why they are dangerous. The students fly around them and other oncoming traffic can't proceed because they don't yeild at the proper time. I've seen many accidents at these round abouts. They need law enforcement to direct traffic or start handing out tickets for not yeilding.

There were tons of accidents, some with major injuries, at those intersections before the roundabouts. No major injuries since, but a few fender-benders. I'll take the roundabouts any day over the 10 minute waits at the left turn lights that used to be there.

"Tons of accidents?" What kind of numerical accounting do you use? The weight of vehicles multiplied by number of accidents? "Ten minute waits"? You are so specific, gee whiz, you must work for the Obama administration. One round-a-bout per half mile is enough--not two in a few yards of each other. We are not Europe---yet.

These Round-a-bouts are the best option. It is uneducated drivers that cause the issues, mostly women and older drivers and before I hear one negative comment, go sit and watch, I am only presenting the facts here.

the round a bouts have YEILD signs NOT STOP SIGNS....that is the problem... a lot of people get freaked out if you have a lane to merge in without stopping....why?!?! if they were paying attention to the lanes they would see there is room and that is how it is designed. if every person was supposed to stop... they would have made it a 4 way stop or left the traffic lights. the point is to keep traffic MOVING...not stop, go, stop, go, stop, go....at rush hour that would make those areas SLOWER NOT FASTER! and what would have been the point? if the area scares you....take an alternative route. no shame in that! the world isn't going to change for YOU! so acting like people are supposed to not 'scare' you...cuz the process scares YOU...is ridiculous!

Sorry Bob, I don't have the run reports in front of me while writing from home off duty. Suffice to say I have worked in an organization that responds to incidents in that area for almost 20 years. Since the installation of the roundabouts, my personal experience has shown that there have been fewer accidents at those intersections, and they have been of lesser severity. If you're so adamant about checking the numbers, file a FOIA request yourself.

It just amazes me how many people get so upset over a little issue such as round abouts. Get a life and do something constructive instead of posting negative thoughts on the internet.

Round abouts are safer, I personally like them and understand how to use them. You do not go tearing through them at break neck speed, either.
Cautious movement of traffic at a slower speed does keep the area free from accidents. You will get where you need to be at a safer intersection.
By the way, I lived out west in Las Vegas for a few years, they allow U turns at posted intersections. Try doing that here, and you could get yourself killed. It is up to the driver to educate themselves of the proper use of these intersections. Just like the round abouts.

Where can I go to get the "Roundabout Education Course"? Seriously, do they have this at the Secretary of State? How can I fully understand how to properly drive on this roundabout when I have people in a panic trying to drive up the a** of my car everytime I drive through it? Just try driving through this intersection at the proper speed and see how many hurried people are honking their horns at you because your not going fast enough. I was not familiar with the area at all when I drove through here the other day. If your from the area great! Seasoned Romeo Plankers need to take a chill and let people learn to drive this round about. Yes, I am a woman driver!

I think that the roundabout are great when the high school students are not getting out of school. Stay away at 2:15 when you have all of the high school students making an illegal right turn from the lane that needs to go straight just to avoid waiting in line. I have had many close calls. I think that the school needs to instruct the students that have a parking permit so that the understand the proper way to use the roundabouts. The Clinton Township police need to have a couple of cars there every day at 2:15 issuing tickets and I guarantee that these illegal turns by the students would stop.The city would also have some well needed money.

I totally agree with "concerned motorist". These roundabouts agree fine except as noted that when the high school lets out these student drivers need a class on how to drive these roundabouts properly and legally but then again I think many of them don't care. They are just interested in getting wherever they are heading and yes, texting as they drive.

I've never had a "roundabout driver education" course. The first one I every encountered was in Florida. 5 or 6 roads met and a railroad track crossed it. I was in college at the time. I never had any trouble driving through it and it was a lot better than having a traffic light. I have driven through the one you all are talking about and didn't have any trouble either. I hate traffic lights. But then I am a "red light magnet", they all always turn red when they see me coming! lol

These roundabouts do not work in the U.S. we don't even teach how to use them in drivers education programs. In law enforcement, I can spend my whole shift just writing accident reports because of the confusion they create.

Ban them... Period. They didn't work in New Jersey... they replaced them with "jug handles", another disaster. They will never work here except for bump shops. Ban the ploiticians that push them on us. November is coming.

I don't tear through them and sometimes I do drive slow because the way some people drive, you cannot always judge if they are going to change their mind at the last minute and come your way. I do avoid it during school though.. that is a disaster...

If you don't like the roundabouts take the light-rail service or Heavy Rail (subway.) Save money on gas and the hassle of roundabouts and sitting in traffic.

Class: Roundabout 101
Know the direction you want to go, before you get to the roundabout.
Then get in the appropriate lane. Prior to reaching the roundabout.
Yield to on coming traffic. When traffic clears it's your turn, GO!
If you get through without any scrapes or dents! You did good!
All you have to do to create an idiot on the road add traffic.

My daughter took driver's ed last summer & her instructor had them go through just about all the roundabouts in macomb county...this one, 26 & M-53; Van Dyke & 18 mile etc so some courses are teaching the kids how to use them. But you're right, I do avoid the area when CVHS lets out.

I dread runabouts and try to avoid them, because way to many people don't know how to use them or are unsure of what to do, and seem to panic and create havoc,for the rest of us.

I've been driving about 45 years and I love the roundabouts the problem seems to be that people do not know the difference between a stop sign and a yield sign?I was taught to always yield to the traffic on my left,once inside the r/about others are to yield to their left,which means you have the right of way! you should not have to stop at every entrance into the round-abouts. Four way stops are treated the same,always yield to the person on your left.

I agree that the round about is far faster and easier to use than waiting for a traffic light. I also agree that using it when the HS is getting out and at about 5 PM, it can be dangerous. I do think that we need some police presence to help the teens and older people learn to properly use a round about. Has anyone looked at how difficult it is to get out of the school parking lot off of Romeo Plank. Has anyone tried to make a left off of Greenfield onto RP during those very busy times? Almost impossible. That needs fixing!

I think their should be tv commercials out their showing people "How to use Roundabouts" especially 19 mile and Romeo Plank since their are two back to back. ALSO any other Driving Tips and reminders could be useful On a TV commercial

Are we really that dull to the point where education is needed on how to maneuver around a roundabout? It takes longer for me to figure out what greeting card to purchase. It's not that hard, Macomb County - it's a big circle. That's it. If you're approaching the big circle, pay attention to the signage before the big circle to see what lane you should be in to access your desired road. If you missed/ignored the right turn only lane that bypasses most of the big circle, don't get into another lane only to cut off traffic that waited in line to turn right. Remember - a lot of drivers these days have CCWs and short tempers; I'm not risking it. Once you get to the big circle, if there are other people driving on the big circle before you, you yield for them first. If the coast is clear you then proceed into the big circle, making sure to stay in the lane the signs you probably ignored before the big circle approached designated you to be in. Once on the big circle, notice that there are no stoplights, stop signs or yield signs. The signs are absent for a reason - don't stop or yield until OUT of the big circle. You exit the big circle by turning right onto the desired road.

That's it. We need manuals for that?! Let me know if you do - apart from that I also can write other manuals you'll need, like tying your shoes and wiping after bathroom usage.

I like the suggestion of using turn signals - what direction could you possibly be going besides right? Even though the car does turn left in the circle, all entrances and exits require right turns, therefore you are constantly heading right. Rule of thumb - if you need a turn signal to figure out directions on a roundabout, avoid the roundabout. Heck, avoid driving altogether. Take the bus.

melanie, I have wow cable and in sterling hts. on their public channel they show you how to navigate thru the round abouts...i think clinton twp. channel on comcast my also.try calling them and ask!!

yes, its a big circle and you merge in and out. simple as that. if its really bad during rush hour and it confuses you....go there when its slow or traffic is non existent 8 am on saturday morning or something and look at the arrows on the ground. seriously, that might help. the other day i approached the round about with a elderly lady in front of me on 19 mile....she stopped at the YIELD sign and waited for the person who approached the YIELD sign at romeo plank...before she would go, she let him pass! ugh! its NOT a 4 way stop! so annoying. yep, its a big circle and you merge in and out, if you can't determine if you can merge in and out based on the relatively low speed the other motorists are approching the BIG circle - well HOW do you merge in and out of traffic EVER? that requires a little bit of merge speed/timing ABILITY! apply it HERE!

Agreed, go there when there's no traffic and really look at how it's set up. It's not that difficult. Biggest issue I see is that people don't understand that it is a YIELD sign NOT a STOP sign, if there is obviously no traffic coming, then GO! If you come to a complete stop at a yield sign you're going to get rear-ended. And once you're in the circle, you have the right of way....like above mentioned, you do not stop while in the circle.

Maybe in 20 years, but drivers are not educated how to use them, especially if you do not live in a large city (like up north). Plus how do people walking ever expect to cross the intersection?

You don't have to live in a large city to know how to read road signs...or perhaps you should stick to up north if roundabouts are beyond comprehension.

Just go to New Jersey to find out what they did with their roundabouts... It was expensive, but they are all gone. Politicians need to stop wasting taxpayer dollars with these pipe dreams that don't work.

We do not need a round a bout. There are so many "ifs". IF everyone follows the signs. IF everyone maintains a safe speed. IF a truck stays in it's lane when in reality they practically run you off the road because MDOT or the MCRC tries to put a round a bout in WAY too small an area...try 26 & Van Dyke. If people speed by schools, run red lights, dont stop at stop signs...how on earth do you expect them to use a round a bout properly???? Police presence is an option but all the cities want to lay off the officers. Get meter maids or some other solution. Until drivers follow the rules, no round a bout will be safe. AND it's great when you have no clue until you are upon the RAB---sorry to be a panicky woman but I know no one is following the regulations-they dont on normal roads-why should this be any different.

Roundabouts regulate traffic better than any other device, quicker and safer except when negotiated by products of the american school(word for dumbing down).

I'm sure there are many more websites like this if you just google it. There were several videos on youtube and other websites.

A "YIELD" sign means yield to the other driver. This means you don't always HAVE to stop, BUT you MAY have to stop.

Coming to a stop may not always be necessary, but it is part of the YIELD if necessary.

People are morons and there's nothing the police can do to fix that. Although painting the curb wouldn't be a bad idea at these round-abouts because they are difficult to see at night. Also, there was "round-abouts for dummies" played on the Clinton Township TV station. These played for months when they were first put in. Bottom line is, there are only going to be more and more of these (thank God!) and it's going to take some people a little longer to get used to them.

I started this round about issue right after they put them. The problems have not gone away & the kids from the high school still speed through them like they are NASCAR drivers and the buses are the same way, and they use both lanes of the round about so anyone trying to turn right from romeo plank onto cass has to wait until all the buses finish using the lanes so they can proceed. Also, if you use these round abouts during rush hour, you will see several adults, in a hurry to get home or pick up kids from daycare, that they also speed through them & they do not yeild to oncoming traffic. Once one car goes through the round about, they all follow so all traffic coming from 19 mile has to stop for several cars until it clears. I see this issue as unresolved & it probably will never get fixed because the city doesn't post police officers out there to give out tickets to those who do not obey the law. What good is a community if you don't have law present to inforce the rules?

Admittedly I never drive these when the HS gets out; however most of the time these roundabouts work very well. The biggest problem that I have ever seen are the people who insist on stopping before they enter, or worse the people who stop in the roundabout! There are occasionally problems with those who don't practice proper lane discipline as marked in the roundabout--but it's pretty rare. Also a few people who just pile into the roundabout without yielding to those already in it -- again pretty rare. When people are using it properly, it works much better than any stop sign or traffic signal intersection both in terms of orderliness and efficiency of traffic handling.

Parents, please have your kids review this information, and ride with them while they negotiate them well at least a half dozen times before letting them drive alone.

This issue should be CLOSED because it is NOT a problem.

It is a HUGE problem....the Macomb County Roundabouts are TOO SMALL in foreign countries they encompass a larger area....get next to a semi going in one in Macomb County...GOOD LUCK..........
To put two right together on Romeo Plank is insanity.
AND NO ONE GOES THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT...This isnt a race.

Semi trucks rarely travel these roads, and if there is one there then other drivers should know to be considerate of them anyway. There is nothing dangerous about the current situation. If you believe there is something dangerous about them, post a proposed solution rather than a complaint.

The Macomb County Road Commission shoves this stuff down our throats....the left turn lights that are NEVER operate the same at the same intersection, the short yellow then red when there needs to be time to turn left...and the inadequate roundabout spaces...you complain and they dont care - their engineers are ALWAYS right...they need to all be replaced by people.

RARELY a semi truck uses this roundabout????? I guess I am seeing things...a mirage of a big semi...
I've seen trucks use it for the school and that other building east of that location...among other locations but it must be a figment of my imagination...

Evidently east siders can't even understand that seeing something once does not exclude it from being a rarity. As in... it's a barbarity that clarity is a rarity.
