Update from the SPPD Marine Patrol Unit: This is an annual issue that begins in October and runs through January, as the Commercial Mullet Season gets into full swing. This causes an increase of activity in these areas, as the fish are easy to get to as they slowly make their way out into open water to spawn. This activity also leads to "poaching" due to the fishermen taking more than their daily bag limit of fish for these areas. As such, we closely monitor the fishing activity and are constantly checking bag limit compliance. We also remind the fishermen to clean up after themselves, as failure to do so could result in the closure of these areas to all fishing. There is an ordinance (7-8), which is a general littering ordinance, which we can use for enforcement, but requires an officer to witness the individual create the mess and then walk away without cleaning it up. In short, we will do all we can to spread the word and take action where we can. We have a training session with patrol officers every week and we will make sure they are aware of these requirements as well. This is a complex issue with a long history in the City and is very lucrative for the fishermen, which draws individuals from all over the southeastern United States.
