The City of Oakland Public Works Department has received this issue. It is registered as service request #603693. Please check back for status updates, or contact us directly at 510-615-5566.
Why is this encampment still there?Wasn't there trouble there last week? We don't want this encampment in our neighborhood . I sent a message to the mayor today and hopefully others will too. The more complaints there are the more likely the city will do something, or hopefully.
This is such a crappy situation. We need a regulated, organized, and safe camping site where people can sleep. The status quo is not working! We also need to redo the entire Northgate corridor. We should reduce some of the space allocated to cars and build affordable housing there.
Forward this SCF to the City offcials and the police. Forward all of them. The city cannot delete the SCF info information. At some point this public safety issue may become a class action lawsuit.
David is right, nothing is going to get done until there's a victim and sues. It will be a great case for a tort class action lawsuit especially when it was repeatedly reported to the City. It's going to be easy to prove that there was negligence involved when it was known that there's an imminent danger and nothing was done about it.
If nothing get done within 48 hours and /or also if this becomes a ongoing issue in future
I will draft a online petition to signup for class action lawsuit against Oakland PW, everyone can join and sign
Again city official got until Friday night to remove these tents and monitor this block every week and address any issues rightaway
These tents are not a new issues at all. City attorney office was also involved in this block issues but not actions taken at all
I want to point out that the City has to give advance notice before clearing a homeless encampment (30 days, I think). These people have rights too (as they should).
This is what happens: when the city moves in, the encampment moves to another location and then, when the City clears the new site, they move back to where they were before. It's a cat-and-mouse game. This is not the City's fault. What could it do differently? Arrest everyone for being homeless? No way!
We need a long-term solution—clearing and re-clearing the encampment is not right. We need to build a regulated, organized, and safe camping space, like other city's have. We should fight to make this part of the "Plan Downtown Oakland" discussion.
Other cities are coming up and trying different approaches, Oakland is doing nothing. Read all the comments on this site about this encampment and see if you would want it near you. It's been reported over and over again. Yes they have rights, but that doesn't include being hostile. Oakland has no excuse not to try a campsite.
I believe they only have 72 hour to vacate. Still camping on the sidewalk is breaking the law. Having stolen property is against the law. Why do there rights trump ours because they have an addiction, They are self medicating mentally ill, They are poor. This is the City's problem. That why we pay taxes.
I am certain that an encampment would greatly increase the safety and security for everyone involved.
I do not believe that local politicians or planners monitor the site, but I encourage you all to join and submit your thoughts to this website: https://nextdoor.com/oakland--ca/ I know that they pay attention to that.
We really need to press for the creation of an encampment and a pedestrian-friendly redesign of the Northgate corridor. There's a lot of discussion about downtown going on right now, so we have a great opportunity to press for these changes.
Thank you for your request. According to our system, we already have an open service request of this kind at this location. Your request has been combined with service request #603702. Yes PWD you've had this issue over, over and over again. This is a safety issue for the neighborhood, A health issue and breaking laws issue. Make it a permanent solution and clean it up for the safety of all.
SF is creating something called navigation centers for the homeless??? I know people have rights but a lot of there rights go away when they are in position of stolen property ( shopping carts, milk crates ect) drunk or high in public, breaking mulitple muni codes, No ID and it go's on. It is a heath and public safety issue leaving them on the streets and in the parks.
David, homeless people have rights and are human beings too. We can improve this area without criminalizing everyone. I know it seems hard to imagine, but it's possible.
Herbert, No one is saying they don't have rights, but allowing them to wreck havoc wherever they feel like it, is not a right. This encampment is out of control, If you've read the comments about this encampment, than you'd know it's dangerous. Housing for them would probably be at the cost of taxpayers, taxpayers paying their lights, gas, water, garbage etc. A tent city with sanitary facilities and services would be an idea. SF seems to at least be at least trying , Oakland is not.
Simplyblu, David Coleman just said that their rights "go away"—that's what I was responding to. No one's right go away. But, yes, we really need to change this. I think a camp would be the way to go. I know Portland has one and probably other cities too. This whole area around 980 and the Bart tracks needs to be redesigned. It's a huge problem!
If Oakland doesn't start taking some kind of action we'll all have tents in front of our houses. All the homeless are doing is testing to see how far they can wreck havoc.
