I agree. High speed traffic. Dangerous cross walk by Russo Park. Poor illumination by Wooster Place intersection. How about the implementation of traffic calming measures such as a traffic table and speed humps?

I frequently cross (on foot) Chapel in this area and have never had a problem.

I agree, I lived there for three years and was always amazed how fast people drive through the area. There needs to be speed bumps installed around the park to slow people down.

Has anyone filled out a complete streets request form for this area? Traffic tables in front of the school would be great. Also, every legal crosswalk (i.e. every intersection) should be marked with zebra (international style) markings.

I agree. Everybody goes way too fast here! I see not only cars but school busses, city busses and concrete trucks going 40 and 50 mph here. Speed bumps and speed humps are not a good solution but there are probably better ways to handle this.

This needs to be resolved immediately. My boyfriends car was scraped on the side when he parked in front of conte school. On another occasion his mirror was hit off the car in the same area. And last week in broad daylight he saw another cars mirror get hit off.

Fix this!

On 04/22/12 at about 2:00 in the morning, a man driving west on Chapel Street through the Chapel/Chestnut intersection (at Fuel & Conte School) managed to do this to our car. Thank goodness he had insurance, because the total repair bill came to just over $6300. As you can see, both driver's side hubcaps were completely destroyed, the mirror broken off, and part of the area around the gas cap crushed. The entire rear axel was broken and had to be replaced, as well as needing a new wheel. The car was shoved some distance forward, and both hubcaps on the passenger's side were smashed as they impacted the curb.

This was not someone driving even vaguely near the speed limit. The same person plowed into a red Dodge parked in front of our car, shoving it several car lengths forward from where it had been parked, breaking its back bumper and probably the rear axel as well. I can post a photo of that car too.

This reckless driver was clearly driving very dangerously over the speed limit, and nearly totaled TWO vehicles parked on Chapel St. This is where we live, this is where we park. We need traffic calming measures on this part of Chapel!!! It is too easy for drivers to fly down Chapel after getting off the highway, coming in from Fair Haven or the nightclub on East St.

City of New Haven, please make our street safer.

In reference to my previous post, here is a photo of the debris field between our car and the red Dodge. You can see the rear driver's side wheel on the Dodge is no longer vertical, the entire rear bumper has been shoved up into the car, the whole tail end of the car broken. The debris field is a combination of parts of our car as well as presumably the perp's car. Our car was shoved forward at least several feet, and I'm told the Dodge was shoved several car lengths forward.

This was all on 04/22/12. This section of Chapel provides no impediment to people driving like total maniacs. I love living in Wooster Square, near the farmer's market and Fuel. I don't love that it seems like only a matter of time until our car is damaged by a crazy driver again.

City of New Haven, please provide traffic calming measures on this section of Chapel Street! There is plenty of evidence and broken car mirrors to prove that the current traffic lights are not cutting it!

This issue has not been resolved in any way and should not be closed. A speed hump would not be the answer here and would probably make things more dangerous.
speed is definitely a problem here and it's not just cars. Extremely large vehicles like city busses, school busses and cement trucks are are regularly traveling at speeds much higher than the speed limit here. Some education, especially with regard to the professional drivers could help here since it is unlikely that these folks would want to jeapordize their jobs to save a couple of minutes traveling through this area.
We should probably get somebody out there with a radar gun to verify the speed at which these vehicles are traveling. Then we can to the opperators of these vehicles and let them know that this is not acceptable

Just because it has been more than a year and a half, it does not mean that the issue is resolved. It is still an issue that the city has failed to address. How about some traffic law enforcement in this neighborhood? There are ways to address this other than the installation of speed humps.

This issue was regarding a speed hump installation. This issue was not closed due to resolution but rather due to no recent activity. The information to request such a measure for traffic calming was posted with the closing comments.

Calling Foul -- not right. Closing an unanswered request for speed bumps on Chapel makes it look like the issue was addressed. It remains an open request.

PS, and lots of us DO think speed bumps on Chapel in Wooster Square area will help

PPS Maybe if Michael Smart every responded to his neighbors as alderman, the request wouldn't still be open -- go talk to him about it

honestly, i find it lazy and insulting that the city of new haven has been closing many issues recently on seeclickfix without actually addressing them. these are issues that clearly need action, and have a good deal of dialogue between citizens.

silencing them and pretending the issue is resolved when it is not is contrary to the entire concept of this platform.

reducing the number of issues reported on the site without actually fixing them is wasting your time and ours.

Back in August, on another thread, an alderman said that he would request a speed trailer for this area to increase enforcement (see his post on http://seeclickfix.com/issues/673408-traffic-road-safety). Any chance of that actually happening?
