I agree with Billy. They're everywhere. The people who deliver them either pick them up or make it an opt-in, as suggested.

If an owner can be fined for leaving a closed trash pick up container in the street why can't a newspaper or advertiser carry the same burden or either removal of their paper waste or an system that only delivers to those who've opted-in? The newspaper trash looks worse.

What if we have an ordinance that makes it the property owner choice. And I agree it would be nice to ask our permission before delivering to our sidewalk.

On a single block I count just under forty newspapers lying out. Not counting the old ones. This needs to be brought under control.

I just want to note...these circulars are PURE money for The News...they're almost entirely advertising with just a couple articles...it's honestly embarrassing and insulting.

I'd ALSO like to note that I requested an answer to a simple question...one that was even SUGGESTED by the admin to be asked...and it's been over a week with no proper response what-so-ever.

I don't trust this system one bit...I do not see any results coming from it...certainly not from any of the issues I've followed.

This issue is more complicated than most issues brought up on this forum. It isn't a new complaint. It has been kicked around over the years by City Council. It has free speech implications. The current ordinance allows you to deliver, even trash like these advertising papers. Maybe if enough people Email a complaint to their council representatives and ask for a response, they might address it. Only Council can change the ordinance.

Yes, lawyers working for businesses can turn private property into a free speech issue that can be exploited by businesses to dominate any community with junk advertising supplements. Witness what has occurred in the national political arena. But there has to be a reasonable compromise reached. This cannot happen without council members who are willing to take measures to protect the private property and rights of itsowners against unlimited exploitation by businesses. This issue is as old as Ann Arbor itself. AT one time residents had worked out a measure of control over signs, advertising on private property, and location of liquor sellers. All of these controls over the community's look and feel have been removed. However, I agree it would be timely to take up the issue with council members. Private property does not have to provide advertising space for pizza sellers and news ad supplements. To prove a point. A friend of mine collected some of what was thrown on his property and took it to the Ann Arbor News advertising office and returned it to them. They told him that he had no right to deposit their supplements on Ann Arbor News property. They called the police to report the trash left on their floor. Business has more rights than property owners. This should be adjusted, don't you think?

I wonder about the free speech aspect. If the advertising does not self moderate it isn't dialogue, it isn't speech, it's some business entity shouting at everyone they can do what they like with your yard. They need to ask.

This issue is being reopened because you didn't answer the question asked last time about what work was performed. There is both a question AND a concern.

The question is, "What work was performed?"

Is that not what you wrote? Well there is a question AND a concern. The question is WHAT work was performed? And the concern is that NO work was performed.

This is really getting ridiculous.

I'd like to say that this issue could be handled in a moderate fashion. it's one that will be with us for a while, no matter is said here. so lets take it slow and easy. if anyone is really concerned about this the best way to show it is by calling your city council person. I encourage everyone to do this and to keep the comments here mild. This is good forum for discussion if we self moderate. The newspaper does not have the right to trash on private property just because they are a business. It is arguable that business has any right to do anything to privately owned property. If they were throwing actual newspapers on our property it would still be arguable, but at least the newspaper (if it were a good one, which it is not) contains opinions on the current state of things. The advertising does not. And it is designed to be a public nuisance. If it were not, it would not continue to come when you ask them to stop doing it. City council needs to change this. The city has lawyers to defend their action against the 'news paper' people. And telling them to deliver ONLY TO PEOPLE WHO REQUEST IT would end the issue. They would have the right to deliver if you want it. Pandering to bad businesses leads nowhere.

Ah good, glad to see they handled this situation by completely ignoring it now. This issue will probably never be closed now because they know citizens will continue to reopen it. If they just ignore it, it will go away.

So twice it was asked what work was performed and twice that question was completely ignored.

You may contact mlive at customercare@mlive.com and ask to be removed from the list (it may take a few times, unfortunately). While reporting people who don't pick up their papers may be a seeclickfix issue, this system does not have the control to opt you out of the program. That being said, contacting your city council rep and getting council to pass a resolution outlawing paper delivery without consent would be the best way to stop this constant bombardment of trash. Otherwise it is up to individuals to contact mlive directly.

Good Point Jenn, I really hope that people who are tired of this for profit trash situation will contact MLIVE at that address. I would like to say that my friends have all called them to ask to be off their delivery and it doesn't work. Maybe the web will do it.

This issue was closed because there is no action city staff can take to resolve the problem. City staff doesn't clear debris from private property and the issue of individuals or businesses being able to leave printed materials for residents is a complicated legal issue that has yet to be resolved. We will leave this ticket open so that the community can continue to discuss it.

As dismayed as I am that it took since last Thanksgiving to receive a proper and respectful response, I none the less appreciate SOMETHING being said about this issue as do others I'm sure.

If I may make a prediction. MLIVE may stop supplements thrown on people's drives and in the street for a while. They will return to doing it. They always have. It's been 20 years of this. The city council needs to do something to stop this. Like 'Billy' I am happy that the city responded eventually by answering.
