It can be confusing & frustrating when a vehicle is coming from Lafayette, one from Front, one from Central, and one from Charter. If only one car happens to be at the intersection however, it's not that confusing, in my opinion.

I agree. Needs to be an all-way stop.

Agree completely that the intersection is dangerous. In addition to signage, need a painted crosswalk across the northernmost end of Lafayette. (There are already ramps. Just need marking on the road.)

This may be assigned to the wrong department as there are no existing traffic signals to maintain at this intersection.

This issue will be reviewed by the City's traffic engineers and Salem Police traffic division. Addition of any new stop signs require City Council approval. Department of Public Services will be informed about the crosswalk striping request. Thank you for reporting this.

Engineering Department reports that crosswalks and other road striping will be restored at the completion of the currently on-going paving work on this part of Lafayette Street. It's anticipated to be complete within the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Hi. The issues existed before the current roadwork began. Since the intersection is already under construction, please rethink the road signs and crosswalks rather than recreating the flawed design that was there previously.

Instead of all way stop what about stop signs only at minor roads and let the main traffic area be without? The current stop is useless as one side is a one way road (other direction) and there is no road on the right (until a little further on (from parking area). This, combined with clear cross walks for pedestrians should suffice!

Do we have any news on the Counsel reviewing or approving new signals for the intersection?

This already-dangerous intersection is now made worse by the lack of crosswalks. Please paint them on the new asphalt.

I wish at least the sidewalks would be temporarily painted. Tourists are walking all over the intersection and with car not guided by proper signals, this section is so dangerous!

Agreed. I'm shocked that the intersection has been left in the current state for October. At least it's close to the fire station--quick response when people get hit by cars.

Yes, it's a free-for-all without proper crosswalks… Especially with all the tourists here!

After walking freely down Essex, I know visitors to the area do NOT realize cars can be driven on Central and Front. I see kids running in the street and it crowded with confused tourists when honking cars try to get through, especially near the cemetery and in front of Red's. Signs need to be huge and bright warning that, unlike on Essex, cars do indeed drive on these streets and people must take caution! There should be one right in front of pedestrians walking out from behind PEM over to the cemetery, one at the end of that street, and one at the beginning of Front Street. This is not obvious to people and someone, especially a child, is going to get seriously hurt!

I watched someone in a wheelchair forced into the middle of the intersection because of a parked car blocking the ramp. Of course, the person parking can't be expected to see a crosswalk that isn't there. Seems inevitable that someone gets hurt and sues the city.

Double-yellow line added. With no break where there should be a crosswalk. Makes it even worse. I give up.

Really makes one wonder in disgust about the "use" of this kind of technology. If you aren't going to pay a whit of attention to what people are saying, why have it. Just adds another layer of frustration.

Any progress on figuring out this challenging intersection ?
(And why didn't our city's founding fathers realize we would all need to get to AJ King and Front street coffeehouse before heading to our beading and knitting classes at seed stitch and front bead works prior to lunch at the shanty, then hair, shopping at Roost, finishing with dinner at Adriatic, when they created all of our twisty tiny streets...)

City will add this intersection to striping plan for this spring to place crosswalks, etc. Will review appropriate signage with Traffic Division of the police department.
