Description
Hello,
I've lived here on Encinal for 21 years. At no time has there been any speed limit signs between Oak and Paru on Encinal. There are no School zone signs for Alameda High or St.Joes. people drive 35-55 mph on Encinal. There appears to be no enforcement of the speed of limit. I have noticed a large speed limit sign at Lincoln School and a speed limit sign at Franklin. As we know these are the "wealthier" schools and mostly white. Multiple fatalities and accidents have occurred on this stretch and it will happen again.

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. Caltrans manages Encinal from Broadway to Sherman as part of CA Hwy 61, and starting this summer Caltrans will construct a major street reconfiguration to encourage safer speeds and make pedestrian crossing safer. The project includes new speed feedback signs, which will include the speed limit. I don’t know whether it includes new regular speed limit signs. Here is Caltrans’ press release: https://www.alamedaca.gov/Shortcut-Content/News-Media/Caltrans-to-Repave-Encinal-Avenue-SR-61
Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
