Yay!!!! Thanks for the photo! What is the name of the sanctuary because I'd like to make a donation and I would love to have my friends / family make donations too. And, if they ever take visitors from the public, it looks like a lovely place to visit.
For everyone who has been following this story: thank you for caring about these two birds!!
I'm attaching more photos of them in their carriers, dropped off at their new forever home. They were still in their carriers because they're getting vet care -
turkeys bred for factory farms, like these two domestics, have a lot of health issues because the US animal agriculture industry puts a lot of effort into breeding turkeys who will get as fat as possible as quickly as possible, to the point that sometimes these cuties can't even stand up because their own weight topples them. they also frequently get conditions in their claws (the fella here has a foot issue that will need attention) and, as mentioned in another thread, loose feathers from stress and self plucking. if you're interested in learning more about how birds are mistreated or getting involved in ways to help, check out United Poultry Concerns, a great advocacy group : https://upc-online.org/
- and these two were also troopers in the car in their carriers. They were pretty quiet (especially the lady) on the highway, but on the streets they did a lot of vocalizing and flapping, so they were very happy to get out of the car, even if they were still in their carriers for their photo op.
For those interested in where they ended up, I personally called dozens of rescues, fosters, and sanctuaries, and after so many people not having room and having to decline us, in the end we actually got TWO AMAZING "yes of course we'll help" responses from TWO AMAZING SANCTUARIES. I previously posted about the incredible And-Hof in the Catskills, but after that we also got a yes a little closer, so LHS decided to keep these Jersey birds in NJ. They now reside at:
Freedom Farm Sanctuary in Cedarville
Both And-Hof and Freedom Farm and totally worthy of your support (whether donations or follows) so please check them out. Freedom Farm also has a patreon with access to adorable photos of the animal residents if you want to continue to follow the story of these two JC survivor birds.
I've requested an update after their vet visit, so I'll post details on their conditions/progress when I get them. Again, THANKS EVERYONE for caring. We totally changed these two lives. <3
And to respond to the above comment, @BH - (sorry the page didn't refresh while I was adding photos) yes they do accept visitors! You have to make an appointment, so definitely check out their patreon for more info!
Thank YOU ! Excited for their updates and so glad to hear they were well behaved in the car. They probably knew they were going to a better place for them!
Happy Days for the rest of their lives !!!
Happy Days because of you and everyone involved !!
I wish you all the very best that life has to offer because you all truly deserve it 😄😄💞💞
Always be safe - well and happy 🐓🐏🐄🐣🐤🐦🐴🐷🐮
Ohhhh thank you for this extraordinary update !!! My heart is so relieved to know our two JC turkey friends are now in a much better place. I extend my gratitude to you ( the individual who posted the photos ) I'll bet it was a fun trip, did the best thing for them. Thank You also to LHS and the Freedom Farm Sanctuary
Thank you so much for keeping us posted on them - I'm so curious to hear how their vet visit goes and I have been (and some friends and family members who I've told about them) are crossing paws for positive prognosis for both of these fine feathered friends !!!
"They are both doing very well, the male does have a bit of an infection in his foot but we are taking care of that. They both are growing new feathers in the spots that were raw and bald. They have both been treated for mites, they are now on a proper diet and the female has even started laying eggs again"
Awh !! That is such Fantastic news ! I know they will now continue to thrive all thanks to you and everyone that helped !! I just hope the person who owned them doesn't get any more farm animals !!! Always be safe & well !! 💞💞😄
My understanding is that their previous guardian had someone abandon them at his property, and he was doing what he could for the birds to the best of his ability, and grew to care about them a great deal in the 2 years he cared for them. I don't think it's an animal hoarder situation or anything like that. I think he just didn't have the resources to do better and once he learned what a difference a better environment could make, he just needed some (repeat) prodding to say goodbye to his companions.
This was handled so well and my gratitude is sincere. I can understand how the gentleman who had been caring for them thought he was doing the right thing. Big city life in that type of environment just was not what was right for these birds, nor what they deserved, NOW they have a much more suitable home and obviously they are quickly adapting and thriving !!! Big big thanks to everyone here ... our beloved JC turkey friends have quite a fan following ;)
I got news the sanctuary will be doing a naming fundraiser to give these two cuties names to match their new lives. For details when it's announced, check out Freedom Farm Sanctuary in Cedarville on social media and patreon. :)
The naming fundraiser sounds like fun !!
I think it would be great if they got their names from the place they were found !!
Maybe JC or Van for the male -- lol.
