Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. The City recently blocked off space to prevent reckless vehicle activity in the large open area at the south end of Monarch, between the lookout tower and Building 25. We added concrete “K-rail” barriers and planters to limit traffic to a 40 foot lane in that area, with gated tenant access. We also placed three large planters in the open lot between the Alameda Point Gym and the skate park. Wheel stops will also be placed in this lot in the coming weeks.
Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
