The Metro zoning specs originally required Hiton/Home2 Suites to provide for a loading dock in the rear of the hotel so they did not disrupt traffic and cause a safety issue when accepting deliveries. Hilton knew before they started construction, that their lot was not big enough to accomodate the required loading dock and 18 wheelers, so they asked for a variance, stating that they did not require the use of 18 wheelers. At the time, I went to the zoning hearing. I voiced my concern over the safety issues. At least a couple of the board members sided with me, but ultimately, the variance was approved in the end. However, the variance was only approved on the condition that Hilton would not use large 18 wheelers parked on the street. They explained to the board that they did not have a need for large deliveries and had already made "strict arrangements" with their suppliers to use only small trucks and on a limited basis. The planning commission told everyone present at the hearing, especially Hilton that they are now on record saying they would never use large trucks or block the street and would be fined if they deviated from their plan as promised.
To the contrary, Home2 has been using large trucks and blocking the street several times a day since they opened. No fines have ever been issued that I am aware of. The intersection of 18th and Demonbreun is a very busy intersection and the added congestion that the trucks bring is a serious safety concern. Not only does Hilton use big rigs when they said they would not, but they park them in front of The Bristol on Broadway Condominiums next door! They park right outside residents' windows and let the diesel trucks idle for long periods of time while they unload and go about their business.
