Since more cars turn left than go straight there needs to be a protected green arrow for those turning left onto Mt. Vernon. Cars coming out of the branches should have their own green light with traffic stopped coming from the other way.

I agree, Steve, that protected green arrows would be ideal. But, let's not forget that would lengthen the time that we wait at the intersection to both depart as well as enter the subdivision. I would prefer improved signage and police enforcement before resorting to protected green arrows. We already endure considerable time before light changes.

Yes, it happens to our family all the time as we wait to exit Trailridge onto either AD or MtV. The other drivers are clearly not yielding even to neighbors turning west. It is particularly bad at rush hour as the # of cars gets long and patience gets shorter. I would like to see improved signage and arrows. I am for the green arrow and would be willing to wait an extra amount of time at that light knowing that I can make a safe and efficient turn. If we used a green arrow, then the north/west bound AD could actually use both left had lanes as left turn lanes onto MtV West.

We live in Dunwoody West and its remarkable how on an daily basis there isn't a wreck as a result. I don't know if signage at the light would help but it can't hurt. Something needs to be done before a serious accident occurs.

This is a real problem, happens to me on a daily basis. It does become worse during rush hour but is a problem all the time. And what is especially annoying to me is that the offending drivers look at you as though they have the right of way.

This happens every day and is very dangerous. I am so tired of these rude drivers acting like they have the right-of-way. However, we need to make sure any proposed solution does not result in backing up cars into Dunwoody West.

Ditto what everyone else has said. There are even occasions where BOTH oncoming lanes will turn left in front of you, when there is only supposed to be ONE turn lane.

It seems to me the simple solution is to get the city to add some better signage to the area. This way there is no excuse to turn illegally. But I agree with the rest, this is a major problem. I witness the illegal turns a good 30-40% of times the light changes.

While in the left turn lane turning onto Mount Vernon, I have been cut off multiple times by people turning left from the lane that is designated to go straight into Dunwoody West. I guess they just didn't feel the need to wait in que in the left turn lane.

I exit from this intersection 6-8 times a day from 7:25 am to early evening. Almost every time someone turns in front of me when I have the right of way as a straight driving car. Some of them look at you like you are wrong, others, I believe "gun it" because they know that it is a deep intersection and chances are they can make it. It is a hazard and an accident waiting to happen.

The so called improvements made to this intesection some years ago have only made things worse. The big sign is so far back to the south that no one connects it to mean this intresection. The microscopic overhead signs designating appropriate lanes are no larger, just green instead of white. Trail Ridge is narrower so right turning cars have to wait behind cars going south or turning left. Plus northboud car on Ashforf Dunwoody can't see any cars in line but the first one. Light timing in all directions is awful. and police inforcement is nonexistant.

Exiting Dunwoody West Nhood is a frightening situation that seems to be getting worse. People turning left will cut you off and think that they have the right of way. I do not know what the answer is, but agree that it definitely needs to be addressed.

It's getting harder and harder to avoid these quick, insistent left turners! If you inch forward, suggesting you're going straight on green, as is your obligation to do, cars just cut faster in front. As others have noted, they rush if you're not super fast; a rear end collision is bound to happen soon. Also, illegal lefts from the lane designated as going straight into Dunwoody West are becoming more common. I leave around 7:10, and it's already bad then. Please, please pay attention to what will certainly be an accident soon!

I agree this is a big problem. I have seen several serious accidents happen at this intersection. I agree that we should increase the signage and police enforcement first before resorting to a light with turn arrows. Maybe a light up sign like the one at Trowbridge and Spalding Drive would capture drivers attention.

I feel the city should install a new signal that gives traffic exiting the neighborhood a left turn green arrow as well as an extended green light time for those heading south on Ashford Dunwoody while the Northbound straight and turn lanes wait on red. Besides the regular problem of Northbound left turners failing to yield to the right of way, it has become more and more common at non rush hours times--11AM for example--to see as many as 10 or 11 cars waiting on Trailridge Way and Oak Trail Drive for the light. Spend the money on the new signal and timing and let the police be even more available for non traffic related law enforcement.

If you don't move quickly forward, you will get cut off by several cars and left to wait. Not only does your hesitancy make you wait, but your neighbors will be backed up 15 deep waiting through 3 or more lights. Move quickly and aggressively. I have found that laying on the horn if it appears that they are moving out will help. Having a large truck is also a plus.
Actually the problem is this - some genius gave them a turn lane without a turn arrow - a rare situation to be sure. Obviously nobody can read the yield sign, since installing that has never helped the situation. Even worse are the folks turning left out of the straight lane assuming since Mt. Vernon is two lanes wide (for only 20 feet) they can go ahead and make that a double left turn. I would be happy to lose those infernal Bradford Pears that muck up the intersection for a turn lane with an arrow getting out of the neighborhood.

This problem seems to be getting worse and it seems to me that many of the drivers do not understand who has the right of way. The majority of the people I have seen turning in front of traffic look surprised that they are being honked at or about to be hit. I believe that clear signage and increased patrols would help this issue.

I believe that most people making the left turn are unaware that both sides of the light are green especially if our neighbors coming out of the neighborhood hesitate. I don't feel that increased patrols would facilitate the issue but add to the congestion and delays. I agree SOMETHING needs to be done with the light.
If the police want to patrol I say have a look at the neighbors coming out of Oak Trail Rd that RUN through the stop sign trying to bet the cars coming up Trailridge Way to the red light.

I am a Branches resident and see the same things - especially drivers who jump the green light and hurry to take their left turn, believing that they have an arrow or just not caring. I have OFTEN had to stop or slow down, so that I don't hit an offending driver in the middle of the intersection. It's as if the intersection has an idiot magnet - only ONE lane turns left onto Mt Vernon, people - not both... and please do not do u-turns in the middle of the street, in a driveway, or a front yard - find a culdesac. The rate at which cars back up into the Branches is much higher than those turning left onto Mt Vernon, and I'm sure that anyone who has driven to work, preschool, church, soccer practice, etc at the busy times can validate this. Please do not give those turning left from Ash Dun onto Mt Vernon a green arrow. We need to empty our neighborhood more than they need to get to ChickfilA.

I was coming out of the neighborhood and planning to drive South on Ashford-Dunwoody when my station wagon was totaled by a non Dunwoody driver failing to yield the right of way. She was cited. The signage needs improvement at the least.

I was getting cut off at least 4/5 mornings on my way out of the nhood to work from drivers turning left from ashford dunwoody. I noticed it happening more often and more aggressively when I had my blinker on signaling that I was turning right. So I stopped using my blinker making them think I was coming straight and quickly turned right on to mt Vernon. I have also noticed when I drive my car it's worse than when I drive the Tahoe. Not sure why but I assume they know I'll brake to keep from having an accident in a nice car and they'll be on the bad end of taking the Tahoe head on... I'm new to the nhood so this is the only way it's been for me but I can tell you it really ticks me off and I'm a pretty patient driver!

I too think is is a significant safety concern. At least 50% of the time that I leave the neighborhood, either going south on Ashford Dunwoody or right on Mount Vernon, I have to brake to avoid a collision. A few times it has been very scary/close.

All the previous commenters have overlooked one key fact - part of the reason people cut off those going straight out of The Branches is due to the fact that 50% of people turning left on MV when coming out of The Branches DON'T USE THEIR TURN signal. Therefore, the driver turning left on MV from AD often assumes its another inconsiderate driver who is turning left out if The Branches without a turn signal. I'm not saying two wrongs make a right , but this problem would improve if people actually trusted other people when they don't have their turn signal activated.

The same thing happens at the traffic light at Costco/Home Depot. I was behind one car in the left turn lane, and two other cars were in the lane for going straight ahead. When the light changed, all three cars turned left in front of oncoming traffic in spite of the driver of the oncoming car blowing the horn.

The City of Dunwoody is looking into this issue and has generated a Service Request #732. Due to the location of this issue it was not initially reported to the City of Dunwoody. Thank you for your patience as we look into a possible resolution.

It was initially reported to the PCID traffic board. Now, why it wasn't forwarded to Dunwoody by PCID board or why Dunwoody didn't pull it over the PCID board in a more timely manner is a good question.

I sat at the intersection waiting to pull straight into the neighborhood and there was a Dunwoody police car sitting at the intersection on the Chamblee-Dunwoody side, waiting to turn left onto Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. I was the third car back. When our light turned green, the car to my left, turning left, cut someone off exiting the neighborhood. The first car in front of my lane marked "go straight", also turned left, AND cut someone off doing it, then the car in front of me pulled into the intersection and made a RIGHT turn. The Dunwoody police car, with a front and center view, did nothing. Perhaps he was off to something more pressing, but I dont understand why this is taking so long to get addressed. My sixteen year old son made a wonderful and coat-effective suggestion: "Put a sign next to the traffic light leading into the neighborhood that says 'left turn yield to oncoming traffic".

There is already a Left Turn Yield on Green sign on the traffic light. In order to notice that the light is green instead of red people have to see it there on the light. The problem is that people 1) can't drive properly 2) can't read 3) don't care. Fastest one to the point wins.

Now they are turning left constantly from both lanes.

In answer to Mr. Grossman the conflict in reporting resulted from a boundary overlay with both the PCID in this area and DeKalb County in the area around the DeKalb County Water Treatment Plant. That issue has been fully resolved however issues that were in that area have to be addressed one by one.

In regards to the issue raised the intersection contains a 'left turn yield on green' sign as mentioned in previous posts. It was thus turned over to the City of Dunwoody Police Department for possible enforcement measures. Thank you for your patience!
