Remove the barriers for winter and it will be significantly easier to maintain, snow plow, and sweep. Just common sense.

Thanks for the good thinking but actually many people myself and my kids included ride all spring fall and winter.

I think the city has a smaller sweeper on a bobcat that could be used for this essential maintenance.

I will say that it seems like it would likely be fine to do repairs and reduce the width of the bike lane during the repairs or during attrition

You can ride spring, summer, fall, and winter. If the barriers are not there, you can still ride your bike. But for ease of maintenance the barriers should come down during winter. If I remember correctly Montreal takes their protected bike lanes down in the winter. I am not looking forward to DPW installing more of these barriers through out town and watching them degrade and my tax dollars wasted.

On anther note, I often see parents forcing their children to bike in unsafe icy conditions and have seen a parent towing their child fall when trying to ride on the ice. Once again, common sense.

Montreal does not "take their protected bike lanes down in the winter"
Most of their infrastructure is permanent, cast concrete curbs, which are actually easier to plow because the plow trucks can just align their blades with the curb, just like they do on most streets.
Cheap, temporary infrastructure like on Union will never stand up to plows in the long term, but it is still better than painted lanes that people driving just ignore and drive through. The sections with long uninterrupted white curbs and bollards did fine this winter, the sections that got hammered were where there were too many gaps. I hope this summer that DPW fills some of the unnecessary gaps, as "strength in numbers" seemed to help the existing infrastructure survive (and better protect the users of the lane).

I believe you hit the nail on the head, cheap and temporary. Makes Burlington look more run down than it is.

Why are you upset at the barriers being a "waste," when the real problem here is that we're letting someone drive that obviously cannot?

Cause with snow build up next to the curb, cars aren't always properly parked, and then the road is too narrow.
They did a great job driving, didn't hit a single car or cyclist.

We let a lot of cyclists ride bikes who cant do that properly either.

In my experience, Union has never been too narrow to drive on. But it sounds like people can't park either then?

How many people have scofflaw bicyclists killed this year? How about scofflaw drivers? Maybe trying to compare the impact of these two vehicles isn't actually that helpful.

I don't know, but the 3 college students riding southbound between the parked cars and the vehicle travel lane I saw this week on North Union definitely did not care about their actions. Scofflaw cyclists will only kill themselves due to their own recklessness.

Actually, that was your comparison. But you're right, they aren't comparable. On top of that, your statement isn't relevant to the issue at hand.

Yeah, I agree in principle. The problem is that you were just excusing a driver, saying that they did a "great job" driving, even though they were damaging infrastructure. Were you holding that driver accountable? To further my point, when a driver breaks the law in any way (speeding, running red lights, etc.), what is the ratio that they will actually get pulled over and held accountable for that? Seeming low enough that they still speed and run red lights, right?

So while I agree with you in principle, I will take issue with you statement that drivers have the law enforced on them. At best, it's uneven and rare.

That guy, no debate. both share the road. The protected bike lane has been poorly implemented and mismanaged.

OMG folks have a great weekend...lets give it a rest I just wanted to report the need for some sweeping. This is not that big a deal.

This has been a long standing debate prior to the addition of the protected bike lanes. Mostly about cyclists traveling against traffic.

The Department of Public Works has resolved this request. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work.
