Description

Houses without water meters currently face a mandatory, "free" installation. The problem is that if your water shutoff is in a finished area (mine is behind a small access panel in a finished bathroom in the basement) the owner is responsible for either moving the shut off or undertaking a renovation to create room for a large access panel to be installed. Installers require a 60cm diameter space around the shut off to do the installation. My shut off is beside a sing, mirror, power receptacle and behind built in shelves. We purchased the house this way in August and are now being told we have 60 days to complete what could a pricey mini-renovation. The city responded to our concerns by offering to send a building inspector to look at the location of our shut off, but there is no program to subsidize homeowners in our position.
