Many years ago, I know the section of Division Street from Atwater to Pershing was rebuilt and widened. Sadly, the work done was insufficient and now motorists must suffer daily with dangerous traffic backups at the intersection of Atwater and Division that officials in both Derby and Ansonia should ALREADY be on top of! However, I see no sign of it.
It may be a State road (legally) and perhaps when the work was done there was an assumption that by now the long promised Southbound Route 8 exit ramp at Pershing would be constructed and open taking a ton of traffic out of that residential neighborhood.
Sadly, here we are in 2016 and the state continues to "study" the addition of this much needed ramp. So, vehicles wishing to get to the Pershing and Division commercial district (which is MUCH larger than it was a decade ago) have to get off Seymour Avenue (Exit 17) and make their way down a RESIDENTIAL portion of Atwater to get to Division. (I would HATE to live there)
What we are left with is car piling up on top of the hill all day. The green light at Cumberland Farms is not long enough to clear the entire cue so it can take 2-3 cycles to get all the cars lined up through the intersection at Pershing. BAD.
Also, there is no right turn lane onto Pershing so those wanting to turn right have to wait in line behind those who wish to continue on Division. BAD AGAIN.
Third, people turning right on Division feel the need to often STOP and look down towards CVS before turning even though they have a green light. This causes half the cars that could get through the intersection to be able to before the light turns red again. BAD A THIRD TIME.
I realize the real solution to this is to get the state working on the Northbound Pershing ramp but that is still many years away.
What can be done NOW? Can the State be ask to lengthen the green signal at Pershing at certain times of the day (7-9 am and 4-6pm) so the "pileup" can be reduced?
People often get stuck in the middle of the Atwater/Division intersection and someone is going to get killed.

Not An Easy Solution (Khách)
All studies point to life of changing stress levels as we have never seen before with 128 different meds to correct stress alone. Many are texting & driving while doing these drugs and the Pfizers and Insurance Companies are only getting rich.Road traffic will continue to be a problem as long as any family of 5..... drives 5 cars and there on the road at the same time.

OK,
Let me give a real life response:
1. You are right, if you can't drive completely thought an intersection would shouldn't enter it. Sadly at Atwater and Division this happens at morning and evening rush every few minutes. Why a police officer is not stationed there for an hour or so escapes me. So saying they shouldn't doesn't fix the problem.
2. The only REAL option at the moment here is to TELL the state to lengthen the green signal at the bottom of the hill during certain hours of the day. Send them photos, meet the DOT there at rush hour. The light is not long enough to handle the cue especially in the afternoons. Without construction as an option, changing the length of the green signal is the only "free" fix.
If Route 8 is not getting an Southbound Pershing exit for another 5 years then they SHOULD cut away part of the Moble parking lot for a right turn lane that runs as far up as they can. This would shift some cars who intend to turn right over and also shorten the cue.
Doing nothing is no longer an option.

Hi Bob,
Actually, there was a dire need for a left turn signal at one of the intersections in downtown Ansonia and it was said here Linda Gentile's office made the request of the state and PRESTO. I trust her staff monitors this site.
The Mayors of both Derby and Ansonia has a responsibility to also check this site for issues within their town. It costs them nothing to read these boards.
HOWEVER, if the Derby or Ansonia Police have NOT made a request of the DOT to resolve this situation shame on them. Last night care had to drive on the wrong side of Atwater to continue down it because cars backing up Division were blocking half the intersection!

This intersection is getting WORSE! Cars coming down from Griffin often block the enter thing (and put so many in danger) when they get stuck in the intersection as they can't proceed down the hill.
Something has to be done about this. State road or not, this hill can't handle the traffic count.
