The city will not get rid of or spray trees for canker worms. It is up to property owners to spray yourself. We have an old HUGE maple in our front yard on city property that had every single leaf eaten last summer but the city refused to do anything. I couldn't even find any business who could treat the tree to kill the bloody things.
Couldn't find any business that looks after pests - not even the city could tell me. I found a banding kit that was big $$$ and was very ineffective - fell off the tree overnight and the worms could get underneath it. Found some poison that might work but the water pressure needed to get into the main tree does not exist and you would be killing birds as well as endangering cats and dogs. I got out the shop vac and went to town. Totally covered our porch, BBQ, walkway!
Here is a video and picture. We are on 20th St. East by the way.
Suggested the chainsaw to the city... there was a hefty fine mentioned. So far I haven't seen the little buggers but am dreading the day. The only thing that is worse than the worms is the female wingless moth laying the eggs all over the house stucco thinking it is the tree bark....
Sympathies to all those struggling with the worms already!
Today's Herald has an article about the worms - if anyone can find "tanglefoot" for banding, let me know. No one in town could tell me about it and I tried everywhere! Also, scoffed at the worms having predators... never saw a single eaten but a bird. Not one!
