A big thank you to Bruce Fischer at TT&P for getting his crew to drop two new in-street ped signs at the intersection this morning!
JD, re: getting two more stop signs there, the City studied this intersection and Willard & Alden a few years back and determined that traffic counts on Willard did not warrant new stop signs. They are disinclined to install stop signs as a traffic-calming measure any longer anyway, b/c of the speed spikes they cause and for other reasons. I personally think a mini-circle would do wonders there since there is plenty of room to create one and where they exist, it is much easier to cross and virtually eliminates accidents. Start with a cheap striped & bollarded one to see if it works, then build a real one and plant the middle if it works. Another option is to install ped refuge islands or "splitter islands", essentially medians through the crosswalks. That would pinch traffic and slow it down quite a bit, too. All are options and could be done cheaply and experimentally. But any solution should address the speed of traffic BEFORE it gets to the intersection as well, a more comprehensive approach. Willard resident Auguste Fortin and I discussed this a few years back, but we did not get a Complete Streets application off the ground. If you're interested in trying to re-kick-start this process, let me know and I can pull some folks together.
Adam is also in the process of trying to pull together a neighborhood traffic-calming group to organize and strategize around these issues, so stay tuned for more on that.
