Tree Tenders

The Fairmount Park Commission and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) joined forces in 1993 to launch the Tree Tenders project which helps address concerns of residents about our urban forest.

Twice a year, through Tree Tenders, Philadelphia residents can take a free basic training course which teaches general tree-care, organization-building skills and grant writing. "The goal is to make each group as self-sufficient as possible," notes PHS project manager Mindy Masli

Notified About

  • 1004 South 20th Street Philadelphia, PA 19146, USA - Schuylkill Southwest
This building is a horrible eyesore and disgrace.
  • Corner Of Cumberland And Amber Philadelphia, PA - Kensington
There is a fenced in vacant lot at the corner of Cumberland and Amber. One of the gates - on Amber St. side -- has been unlocked and there is a stream of people going in and taking advantage of the overgrown weeds and trees to do drugs. Trash is also being dumped in there.
  • 768 S 21st St Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Schuylkill Southwest

The empty sidewalk tree pit at this address has been left to overgrow with excessive amounts of weeds. Trash has progressively become trapped or flat out thrown into the pit over the past few months. With the thick collection of weeds it never moves and simply rots causing both a consistent smell and eyesore.

Does or will the city compel neighbors to uphold a modicum of respect for the outside of their homes/rentals?

  • 1000 S Cleveland St Philadelphia, PA - Schuylkill Southwest
The corner lot on S Cleveland St and Carpenter St has not been cared for in at least 7 months. The weeds are growing as tall as trees, the sidewalk is rubble and overgrown, there is dog waste and this morning there is human waste and flies.
  • 714 S Hicks St Philadelphia, PA 19146, USA - Schuylkill Southwest
Tree is growing out of house & home to many stray cats
  • 2300 E. Sepviva Street Philadelphia, PA - Kensington
    Tree blocking highway
  • Mifflin St Philadelphia, PA - Newbold neighborhood
Garbage piling up in abandoned tree well. On side of 1854 Carlisle St.
  • 2106 Catharine St Philadelphia, PA - Schuylkill Southwest

The entire house is in a state of complete deterioration, front and back. It is most obvious in the back, with trees growing out of the house in both the 1st and second stories. Windows are shattered, the boarded up portions have come off and the backyard is a jungle of trees, weeds and garbage causing smell and rodent problems.

The sidewalk behind the home is similarly cracked and broken with trash spilling out of the broken fence.

  • 1912 W Passyunk Ave Philadelphia, PA - Girard Estates
The tree is overgrown, causing the sidewalk to heave and crack. The brick staircase is crumbling. There are piles of trash accumulating around the staircase and the area always smells like feces and urine. I think the property is vacant and is owned by an absentee
  • 1606 Catharine St Philadelphia, PA - Schuylkill Southwest
The back patio of a PHA house at 1606 Catharine St has a weed that's taking over our neighborhood!!! It has grown into a huge tree. Its seeds have dropped into other back patios nearby, which have created more undesired growth. The large leaves have made our back patios in the shade 24/7, killing plants and flowers and creating a mess. Please remove the source, the mother of all weed trees, growing behind 1606 Catharine. Thank you.
  • 1517 Walnut Street Philadelphia, PA - Rittenhouse Square
Someone, presumably the construction company A.J. Lewis, poured cement into two tree pits in front of a storefront construction site. The trees are completely strangled!
  • 407-499 S 22nd St Philadelphia, PA - Fitler Square

Update 2/2/13: the lane was cleared late fall '12. However it's due for another sweep already. The round seed pod debris is persistent and dangerous to bike tires. This should be a regular maintenance item. Thank you.

The portion of the 22nd St bike lane along the parking lot has been jammed up with tree debris for as long as I can remember (a year or more?). The bike lane also loses some width in this block, and combined with the junk in the lane it is dangerous and I have seen bikers swerve into the car travel lane to avoid it. Now the fallen tree debris is impeding even more on the bike lane and contrary to popular belief it is not washing away in the rain or composting itself into the pavement. I believe it should be the city's job to sweep or scrape up this debris to avoid a total bike lane takeover and lots of swerving bikes. Please.
