  • Home Ave & Shelburne Rd Burlington, VT, 05401, USA - Burlington Electric

It appears recent rephasing of this signal has made traffic flow less efficiently.

Since the work was done in the last 2 weeks, afternoon southbound traffic is regularly backed up much further than it was previous to the work. Starting as early as 3:15, traffic can sometimes be back to Ferguson Ave. Eastbound traffic is also seeing more significant back ups. Northbound traffic is sometimes backing up into the intersection with the end of the 189 ramp in ways it didn't previously.

Could the signal technician please monitor this intersection on a weekday afternoon to see if some minor modifications to the phasing could improve the flow? One thought is to have the south signal go to green for both the southbound traffic and the traffic turning left onto Farrell Street, as it was previously. The new phasing has a delay between when the green arrow shows and when the southbound light fully turns green. This delay seems to create an unnecessary delay in getting southbound traffic through the intersection.

Understandably, this entire area is poorly designed with three traffic lights in quick succession but until the Shelburne Road corridor study happens, many years from now, I know we're stuck with the mess we have.

A large branch overhanging the sidewalk has been largely hollowed out by woodpeckers. While the branch still has many leaves, it may be worth investigating whether it could become a hazard to people walking beneath it.

The temporary crosswalk across Flynn Avenue, just east of the construction site should be removed prior to the start of school. If it remains, children (and parents) will utilize it at drop off and pick up, which could be dangerous. It is in a location where drivers are not used to seeing a crosswalk and are, instead, used to looking for pedestrians (with help from the crossing guard) at the signalized Flynn/Pine intersection.

A patch installed at the intersection of Wells and Ferguson after excavation several years ago has settled/subsided. A cold patch was added a year or so after the patch, but the patch continues to settle. The continued settling has created a large dip or depression in the middle of the intersection, which fills with water. I suggest adding it to the list of patches for the summer. A cold patch will not be sufficient to fix the problem.

There is glass in the street in front of 170 Ferguson Ave. A sweeper came through late last week to clean up after a car had its windows broken in front of 176 Ferguson. It appears that some of that glass was simply transported down the street and not actually swept up by the sweeper. Recommend sending the sweeper through for another pass to insure all glass is cleaned up.
